Drag RACE Showdown: 2011 Ford Mustang 5.0 Vs. 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS

Drag RACE Showdown: 2011 Ford Mustang 5.0 Vs. 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS
Popular Hot Rodding reports:

PHR is one of the lucky few magazines to get invited to Ford’s 2011 Mustang 5.0 press junket. And while we’re sworn to secrecy until March 29 not to divulge our driving impressions, they said nothing about giving away the pure facts, so here goes. This morning, we arrived at Camarillo Airport where a huge stretch of tarmac was cordoned off for eighth-mile drag racing. It was clear from the moment we arrived that the 2010 Camaro SS was right in the crosshairs of Ford’s non-Federal-bailed-out gunsights. And while many of us U.S. taxpayers were secretly rooting for the government-subsidized Camaro, the well-represented Mexican press contingent had no such predilection. On deck was the 400-hp six-speed automatic equipped 2010 Camaro, and the six-speed automatic-equipped 2011 Mustang GT with its new-for-2011 five-liter mill making an “official” 412 hp.

Journalists alternately lined up to drive both
cars
trying different launch techniques, and when the dust settled, every scribe to a man (and woman) had a fistful of timeslips to prove that the Mustang was faster—and by a substantial margin...

With all of that power these cars which are designed to go in a straight line cant beat a 370z that was designed with track use in mind?

Lets be serious here its 2010 the Camaro and Mustang arent straight line cars anymore from the 60s you may want to step into this century and this year thats an old outdated argument. Im surprised the Mustang isnt much faster though than the camaro based on the numbers. This will be the first time in a long time it will be faster than a camaro the last generation camaro was much faster than the mustang hell the old SS with 320hp was running what 4.9 seconds to 60 (which is funny with 100 less horses it could actually keep pace or outrun the new camaro)

Can't really compare the 370Z to the Camaro and Mustang. They are two different classes. Of course the Z handles better, it is made for track use.

According to Joe the numbers for the "Z" don't show it and I'm inclined to agree. GM's Vette's are known for their track abilities so it doesn't surprise me that a Camaro from the same company beats the 350......

I've read reviews that say it has a very solid suspension setup. It's not entirely track tuned, it is also a good highway driver. I don't know what euro car mags you have been reading.

I have now seen 3 online stories and a video like this (putting the Stang out front)- all comping the revised Ford and Camaro with Automatics - which conveniently keeps the LS-3 Camaro (426hp/420, manual vs 400/410 in the L-99/ auto) out of the comp.

While the new 5 liter and light weight of the Mustang GT will be an improvement, there is also some careful marketing going on here.
