What Should Hyundai's NEXT Move Be To Keep Their Momentum Rolling?
The big news in automotive marketing this week was that Joel Ewanick is leaving Hyundai and going to head up marketing at Nissan. Hyundai won 2009 marketer of the year under Ewanick’s leadership and the company implemented the breakthrough Hyundai Assurance Program.

The Hyundai Assurance Program was a stroke of brilliance at a time when the economy and the auto industry were in a tailspin.  It basically gave consumers a no risk way to purchase a vehicle.  If you bought a Hyundai and subsequently lost your job, you could return the car, no questions asked.  Truly brilliant and it propelled Hyundai through the recession and out the other end.  Hyundai’s 2009 sales grew 8% and its share of market was up 1.1 points.  This performance earned it elite status as one of only three automobile brands (Kia & Subaru were the others) to increase volume in 2009, while the industry overall declined 21%*.

The Hyundai Assurance Program was an unqualified success in a tough marketing climate.  But now what?

1.) miata fighter
2.) Jeep Wrangler "knock-off" - i did not say fighter because they will never come close to the Jeep Wrangler. They could never build a true Jeep Competitor.

They need a mid-size hard top convertible or coupe based on the Sonata. Offering just the Genesis coupe isn't enough, they should expand the line to a convertible as well. A luxury SUV based on the Genesis coupe platform will also help as it can be seen a true Lexus RX competitor.

As much as I hate to admit, what Hyundai needs now to keep the ball rolling is a pickup truck. Not the crossover type like the Ridgeline, but a real body-on-frame truck. They already have a chassis, from the Kia Borrego. They have everything such a truck would need already in the inventory. They have V6s, V8s, and a V6 turbo-diesel (a 3.0L V6 with 237hp and about 333 lb-ft, which allegedly meets US emissions).

Keep building nice looking cars. The sonata for one has a nice road presence.

Nothing. Stay on strategy. And, refine, refine, refine.

The true momentum will show when these current vehicles get some miles on them and the repairs [if at all can be done] surface. I just don't feel these cars are really built to last. They look nice and everything is good when its new.
