Carbon Motors Needing Funding AND A Strong Product, Can They Do It?

Carbon Motors Needing Funding AND A Strong Product, Can They Do It?
When I was on Fox News' automotive show this past week, Carbon Motors CEO William Santana Li seemed extremely confident in his firm, Carbon Motors. But, as this Automotive News piece points out, things are not so steadfast.

For example, 1) the company needs federal funding to get the cars off the line.

AND...

2) The 13,000 reservations are not binding

AND...

3) These reservations are running under the assumption that the cars are competitively priced and meet safety standards.

Those are some serious hurdles to overcome but we're rootin' for you, Carbon.

Automotive News reports:

CEO William Santana Li says Carbon Motors Corp. expects to be on track to deliver its first purpose-built police cars in 2013 if a request for a federal loan is successful.

Although the Indiana company has no orders, Li said, "We have over 13,000 reservations from 350-plus law enforcement agencies in 48 states." Those reservations are not binding and assume that the vehicles are competitively priced and meet safety standards, he said.

The first vehicle "will roll off the line 36 months after the Obama administration approves the federal loans," said Li, an ex-Ford executive...

I still don't have a clue what this "homeland security company" is thinking.

The idea that a supremely expensive, clean sheet design, purpose built law enforcement vehicle is a good business venture in this environment is just nuts.

This is a business that Ford, GM, and Chrysler with all their means could not make such a product pencil. No, they too have to modify existing products to offer law enforcement vehicles. Oh and they do it very well thank you.

City governments are not going to want to spend out 2x for a police car that is not proven, does not have a proven company behind it, and that uses an expensive BMW diesel to power it. Sounds risky. Sounds like major brain damage for city managers.

GM, Chrysler, and Ford will eat Carbon Motors for lunch.

This would be an ideal police cruiser if the price is right. The BMW diesel will be far superior to the gasoline v8 engines. An inline 6 has 7 main bearings on the crank verses 5 main bearings for a V8, not to mention easily doubling the fuel economy of the V8's. I am sure it will smoke all but the Hemi police cruiser as well, with greater top speed along with the better fuel economy due to having no external light bars to create wind drag. It would really shine as a highway patrol car with its greater top speed and superior fuel economy.

I am not be thrilled about the aluminum frame, Why not a chromoly frame, stronger and malleable in the event of an accident, aluminum would crack and break in the event of a serious accident, you don't see it in race cars for a reason, aluminum is not score approved, And for a law enforcement vehicle the heavier the vehicle would be an advantage when you are forcing a vehicle off the road, If this had a chromoly cage/frame I would like one, As long as it was safe, it can't be safe with the aluminum frame. And what is up with this company only serving the Gov? Do they think this death trap is too good for us? The only thing I don't like about this is the lack of safety and that we can't buy one, not that I would want to the way it is with the inferior metal.

truckman, I have noticed that my longer posts are more often deboosted than short ones. I believe this is related to having more points that someone might disagree with, while ignoring valid points in the post.

Just thought I would share that observation.

For the debooster, please state why you disagree? To debate is the reason why we blog here. To not say anything states you have no informed opinion.
