The Durango and Grand Cherokee have an excellent platform to begin with. I see no problems here. And Mercedes engineers will definitely tweak it a bit for use in the M class.

People have this weird obsession with platforms and how a platform "sucks" if it comes from a "lesser manufacturer", which I don't see Dodge or Jeep as being.

Furthermore, doesn't the HS250h ride on a Corolla platform? The ES on a Camry? The LX on a Landcruiser? Huh? Financial reasons dictate these moves for any manufacturer.

@ david999: This is same kind of warped thinking that basically killed all (possibly) successful areas of synergy w/n the failed M-B/Chrysler merger. And in today's environment, it's a good idea to utilize whatever development relationships as much as possible. The average consumer will never know (unless you tell) that a Jeep & a M-B SUV ride on a variation of the same platform. And for the most part, they won't care.

in that render, the tail lights looks a bit like the old 5 series wagon tail lights.
