NEW YORK AUTO SHOW: It Is Amazing What Different Colors And Surroundings Can Do For A Car, No?
Have you ever seen a car at an auto show under the harsh lighting and in the wrong color? Well, if you did not already know, it makes a helluva difference.

Case in point; the 2011 Audi A8

Since I have seen it on the auto show circuit, beginning in Detroit, it usually was colored in some light color -- like beige -- that just seemed to be unflattering for the big-daddy Audi.

I would look at it and pick it apart and say "Meh, it is not that good looking."

Clearly, I was disappointed with the latest design.

Then while 001 and I were leaving the New York Auto Show after the first day's worth of hard work, we saw a black 2011 A8 parked awaiting to chauffeur one of the higher ups at Audi.

So much so, I exclaimed "Wow!" Goodness, it looked absolutely fantastic.

On the street in a dark color with these wheels is where this Audi looks its best, no question about that. Although I know it does not compete with Mercedes-Benz's E-Class, the A8's design blows the E sitting behind it completely away. The 8 has this elegant and techy appearance to it; you just know it means business.

Am I wrong here or am I on point?

We want to know where YOU think this black 2011 A8 places on the Big Three of Germany's totem pole. Rank 'em!

Note: I love its squatted stance in the third picture.

where in China was this, didnt realize they had already made the long wheelbase A4 for that market yet, well I guess it was probably about time it looks like what I expected to.

There are plenty of details I notice that distinguish this from the A4, but then again, I've never mistaken a she-male for a real women, bmwdrvr. Definitely looks good in black, double-O.

It's funny how it is always the same bloggers putting down Audi. Like we don't get your beennie bais. And the 7-Series is what only a sow (mother pig for you BMW fans) would love.

that's the first thing I thought, it looks like a big A4, but did you miss the article with the new 7,5 & 3 stacked on top of each other? Quite similar as well, and the new 7 looks just as bad if not worse in lighter colors, this is in person as well.

You couldn't afford an A8, so stop playing big shot like you know anything. The only bottom of the barrel is your lame remark about Audi reliability. Try sitting in a crumy C-Class for a change.

The black looks nice, but why is it that the A8 doesn't look like it's a flagship sedan next to the Xterra and in front of that new E-class? It's really unfortunate that the imposing grille only makes the car look narrower, while the length isn't apparent as well... now I see what people were complaining about - looks like a big A4, doesn't it? At least the interior is nothing like an A4.

I think you will all change your mind when you see it in person.

It looks regal and expensive.

Wheels are awesome too.

We shall see 001, we shall see.......

So what would I rather have?

1. A7........oh, wait a minute- make it an S7
2. Take the S63 for the backseat and 0-60 in 4.2
3. 7 series? Uh-uh. Not unless it's a 760Li in Black with a reworked front kidney grill that doesn't swallow adults and giant condors whole like the current one does....

Wrong......! I saw the new MB E-class in white, the front end of the new MB E-Class blown this Audi A4, I meant Audi A8 out of the water. The Audi A8 got a better rear design for sure, but interior they both on par with each other.

And yes, I have to agree with bmwdrvr and 204E60 here this look like a stretch Audi A4.

Yes, this new A8 simply looks like a large A4, but Audi has always played the "Same Sausage, Different Length" game. As if BMW isn't guilty of this design strategy. Just look at the 7-series and the new 5-series for evidence.

I really believe this new A8 will defeat the 7-series and S-class in comparison tests and sell in much large numbers than ever before for 3 three reasons:

1) The exterior maybe boring, but it's not an ugly looking design. The car is simply bland, but it does not come off as offensive. I strongly believe buyers will be able to overlook the exterior blandness of this A8 due to the impeccable interior and excellent handling.

2) The interior is once again the class-leader. This time though the A8 packs all sorts of techno-gadgetry such as the MMI Touch, and night vision etc. to the gobbles of luxury such as the front and rear heated/ventilated/massaging seats and extremely high quality cabin materials.

2) The handling of this new A8 is a HUGE step forward. The car grips the road much harder than a 7-series or S-class and the Audi Drive Select and Rear Differential systems really make this car handle like a rear-wheel-drive car. To add to the vastly improved handling is the increase in fuel efficiency, which makes the A8 the most fuel-efficient car in class.

Sure, it might be bland. However, this new A8 comes loaded with a super luxurious interior this time loaded with techno gadgets that will make a computer geek grin, and handling that is better than any previous A8 by a LONG shot.

"Yes, this new A8 simply looks like a large A4, but Audi has always played the "Same Sausage, Different Length" game. As if BMW isn't guilty of this design strategy. Just look at the 7-series and the new 5-series for evidence."

The new 5-Series looks more like a bigger 3-Series than a smaller 7-Series from the outside. The INSIDE looks like a 7-Series, but that's a good thing, since the 7-Series is very very nice inside.

"I really believe this new A8 will defeat the 7-series and S-class in comparison tests and sell in much large numbers than ever before for 3 three reasons:

Glad you agree it's bland. Even you have to admit you're as biased as they come, so if you can admit it's bland, how must it look to normal people who don't east, sleep, and breathe Audi?

"2) The interior is once again the class-leader. This time though the A8 packs all sorts of techno-gadgetry such as the MMI Touch, and night vision etc. to the gobbles of luxury such as the front and rear heated/ventilated/massaging seats and extremely high quality cabin materials."

The Audi is undoubtedly nice inside, but night vision, heated/cooled/massage seats front and rear, night vision, and high quality materials are on the 7 and S-class as well. None of these cars are lacking in gadgets, toys, or richness. If you want to tout how gadget laden the car is, compare it to the new XJ, which doesn't have any of those items. You're barking up the wrong tree with BMW and Benz though.

"2) The handling of this new A8 is a HUGE step forward. The car grips the road much harder than a 7-series or S-class and the Audi Drive Select and Rear Differential systems really make this car handle like a rear-wheel-drive car."

Interesting point. Not because it's true, but because you haven't driven one. Probably haven't driven the others either (based on your comments you definitely haven't driven a 750i xDrive M Sport w/ the 20" wheels and sport tires). I too am interested in a comparison between those two and an S550 4MATIC. I've driven the BMW and Benz -- if the A8 can handle like that M Sport 750i xDrive then kudos to Audi, but they've got their work cut out for them.

Why not just say you think it'll win because it's an Audi and you work for Audi and love Audi and want to have Audi's babies? That's basically what you said, you just tried dressing it up in a bunch of rhetoric. You'd come across as more sincere though if you just skipped the "here's my made up reasons why..." parts.

I don't think anyone doubt new A8 won't be competitive. I think it will be very competitive or even best(being the newest) in most categories but so far can only comment on design which i think is not bad but could have been lot better and something new/different from older model.
This design is very very close to the outgoing model and also looks a lot like cheaper and common sibling A4 only enlarged.

Engine wise also nothing special, was expecting 4.2 V8 to be near BMW's V8. Now even Infiniti has 400BHP+ V8 engine.

Hey BMW fan boys. Don't have a heart attack over Audi. You seem to spend a lot of your time reading and commenting on Audi threads (not to mention the liberal doses of deboosting). If Audi is so inferior to your favorite brand, why on earth do you spend so much of your time following every Audi thread on Autospies? Maybe you need to spend more of your time giving your "beemers" a hug instead? It might help relieve your anxiety over Audi.

Get a clue JRob- Audi has been making big grills for a looooong time.

But the new nose on the F01 is brand new and has been a bone of contention with many bimmerfans. By contrast, the new F10 grill is classic BMW and usually gets a thumbsup...

Plus it won't suck in your family when they cross the street.....

it doesn't matter when they came out. That has no bearing on the fact that it's ironic for someone to chastise one car for having a big grill while simultaneously praising another car with an even bigger grill.

i think the pissing match between Audi and BMW fans is humorous, yet sometimes annoying. The new A8 is a beautiful looking car, a 7 Series is a beautiful looking car. The world can exist with more than one luxury sedan.

This article was purely written to say, cars should not be judged at how they look on a showroom or car show exhibit, but how they look while out in the real world.

I own neither, can not afford either, do not work for either. I just enjoy automobiles, and they both have their place. So instead of all of the pissing contests, grow up and just let others enjoy the articles, because in the end, NO ONE REALLY CARES that a BMW person hates Audi's and an Audi person hates BMW's.

JRob, that's like saying an elephant and a great white shark look the same just because they're both big. No.......
They both may have big grills but the 7's is to be frank, just hideous and many Bimmer fans agree because it's ATYPICAL for the brand. On the other hand, yes all Audi's have big grills but Audi fans typically don't mind because it is TYPICAL for the brand....

1) bigger is bigger, period. You just want to justify the fact that you're a hypocrite.
2) Audi's didn't always have that giant grill, and people bitched about theirs too. Still do.
3) learn to use the "reply" button.

So by your reasoning Kim Kardashian and Kirstie Alley look the same because they're both BIG........LMAO

Let's see how many other new Bimmers besides the 7er and 5GT get a grill that big again. Care to bet there'll be none?
