NHTSA Seeking To PUNISH Toyota With Fines

NHTSA Seeking To PUNISH Toyota With Fines
**Thanks to uaw_lax for the tip!

CNN Money reports:

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The Department of Transportation's National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is seeking the maximum fine of $16.4 million against Toyota Motor Corp. for failing to notify the agency of a "sticky pedal" defect in its cars for at least four months.

Under federal regulations, automakers are required to inform the agency within five days of determining that a safety defect exists in one of its products.

NHTSA learned, through documents obtained from Toyota (TM), that the automaker knew of sticky gas pedal problems since at least September, 2009, the agency said in an press release.

"We now have proof that Toyota failed to live up to its legal obligations," said Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. "Worse yet, they knowingly hid a dangerous defect for months from U.S. officials and did not take action to protect millions of drivers and their families. For those reasons, we are seeking the maximum penalty possible under current laws."

This fine is little lax considering more than 100 people in US have died from the SUA in toyota's. Mind you toyota will still have to pay out on all the civil suits.

vlad --- This whole thing is Toyota's fault whether you like it or not. Toyota recalled about 11 million cars for 4 different safety defects. Steering in the Corolla, Brakes in the prius & lexus HS, floor mats in the Rx back in 2007, the current es & camry models & then the gas pedal/electronic issue with the current cars..... Toyota even stopped producing cars for a couple of months. Lets say that of the 50 people that died, only 25 were due to anyone of these safety issues, does it still make it right?

Get over it people. Toyota hid and lied about defects to become number one, even Mr. Toyoda stated that to congress. The deserve everything they have coming to them....

Granted the Media blew up and sensationalized some of the stories before they found out the truth, but the media always does that ... That is expected... Still there is no excuse for Toyota to do what they did. They created this monster and it will have to run its course....

16 million is cheap for a company the size of Toyota. Besides, name one other foreign brand that spends as much they do marketing a "perception" of quality.

Yeah, 'yota moving forward.

Toyota builds cars that kill people, yet people here are defending them. Americans are the only people in the world who defend Corporations. LOL . Brainwashed masses.

If your gonna get these stories up quicker, then I suggest reading the WSJ. They give more insight and detail than CNN ever could.

Aside from that, it's a CoS (croc of shit) if you ask me.

Blah, blah, blah... Okay, we get it. Toyota was in the wrong. I found this news EXTREMELY funny when it was fresh because everyone I know who talked down American and German cars put Toyota and their perfect quality on a throne. I have proved my point to them that EVERYTHING man made can fail. Now, this Toyota news is getting a little stale. Sorry and God bless to the families who lost someone as a result of all of this. I am in no way making fun of the tragedy part of this news or saying it isnt that big of a deal but we all must move on now. Ive had my little laugh. Im not that big of a fan of Toyota but I will say all of you who think that Toyota wont bounce back from this are fools. This has been said before but I guess it needs to be said again: Audi is prime example.

They just copying and copying very bad so take it. Now they lower the prices of theirs cheap product to obtain money , people have to buy another brand and that's all like Nissan for example.
