Bmw and Volvo ending U.S. sales of 5-Series and V70 station wagons

Bmw and Volvo ending U.S. sales of 5-Series and V70 station wagons
With US consumers switching to crossovers, the large station segment in the country has declined. As a result, Volvo is ending US sales of its V70 after the 2010 model year. It’s possible that Volvo will exclude station wagons from its offerings completely within a year.

Meanwhile, BMW of North America will not import the next generation of the 5-Series Touring, which will go on sale elsewhere in May. Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, said that sales of the station wagons have dropped in the US because buyers are switching to crossovers such as Volvo’s XC60 and XC90.

This is too bad. I guess Subaru didn't get the memo... but then why are there Outback numbers going up??

seems a shame, both wagons are pretty nice looking... American's may need to wake up and realize SUVs are not the only way to travel comfortably, get a wagon for four adults or a van for more- SUVs are supposed to be 4wd and for that matter, you can get awd on most wagons and some vans

It's a horrible idea if you ask me. A wagon is much more useful than an SUV. Better fuel economy, more sporty looks/handling, and in most cases more cargo capacity. I would prefer a nice wagon of a lumpy SUV anyday.

Well I guess my father is glad he has his 2010 XC70, what a phenomenal wagon, with the 3.2 and AWD and the most comfortable seats in any luxury car in the class.

I'm perplexed how these two wagons are leaving after years of service, yet Acura, the ugly beak duckling of luxury cars is bringing over the Accord Tourer as a TSX wagon? Typically trends are followed not left behind.

the old accord wagon has been a hot used car find and I'm sure the TSX wagon will be one as well

With the new requirements for fuel economy by 2016, Station wagons will be back...
No way S.U.Vs will reach 35 mpg in full size...
Put a nice Diesel in a big wagon and you'll get it.

I think the V70 got too big and expensive when it switched to the S80 platform. On some site they showed renderings/spy pics of a V60 wagon that looked pretty hot. Hard to say what the Chinese will do with Volvo, but that seems like a smart step.

I also predict by mid-cycle refresh, BMW will bring the 5 series wagon, realizing their blunder with miniscule sales of the 5GT and X6.

Don't count wagons out yet.

Audi limits the selection of wagons or "Avants" in Audi speak, to just a few models but they have a very strong following here in the US and they will continue to come here. Despite the popularity of the Q5 and Q7 models, the Avant series holds it's own here in the US. They are very popular on the East Coast, but also in mountainous regions with the skiers, and surprisingly, the West coast with the surfers.

For some reason, the famale population of the US simply likes to sit higher and prefers the crossover concept. Since women influence over 80% of all vehicle sales in the US, the wagon is banished to "niche" status here.
