You Won't Believe How Much The Nissan Leaf Will SAVE You

You Won't Believe How Much The Nissan Leaf Will SAVE You
The Truth About Cars reports:

When the all-electric Nissan Leaf will be available in Japan in December, buyers will be faced with a tough decision: Should I buy a Nissan Leaf for $40,000, and deal with range anxiety, or should I go with the $26,000 gasoline equivalent?

To which Nissan will answer: “The Leaf, of course. It will save you huge amounts of money.” How much? Are you sitting down?

After six years of Leaf ownership, you will have saved $361. That’s right. Threehundredsixtyone dollars.

What do you think the answer of the average Japanese buyer will be?

You guessed it right: “Hanashi ni naranai?” Why bother?

You got to be kidding me right? I think I pass and get the new 2008 or 2009 Infiniti G37s instead and have fun with it.

Well kick in some govt. incentives, additional gasoline tax and Obama's wrath on Iran ( gas around 7 bucks) and that 361 will multiply like a hutch full of rabbits on Viagra.

Fact of the matter is its where the future is .. By speeding up the revolution most of the West will use the electric power baton to keep the flood of chinese cars at bay.

I don't car about what Japanes are paying. Really.
Here is USA, Leaf will cost you $32,750.
Minus $7500 fed tax credit (AMT friendly, mind you!). Minus $5000 California tax rebate (if you are the fist few hundreds of people). The cost to you, pioneer, is $20,250!!!
A comparable ICE car would be the Nissan Versa (whose chasis Leaf is based on) which costs about $16-18K fully loaded (note: Leaf will come fully loaded). My extra cost is only about $3000.

Lets say that I own a Leaf for 6 years.
My PG&E bill is on tier-III, which is $0.23/Kwh (Tire-I/II is around $0.11/0.13 KWh). The Leaf has a 32Kwh battery. 20Kwh is usable range. Charging will cost about $4.6 for 100-mile range. Says, conservatively, I will only get 75-mile range. That is 16.3 miles per dollar.
A Versa gets about 30 mpg/combined. That is about 10 miles per dollar.
If I drive 12000 miles per year, it will cost me $736 with a Leaf, and $1200 with a Versa. I save $464 a year. That is $2784 for 6 years.

Not to mention that an EV is low cost to maintain, and probably much more reliable due to less moving parts. The battery will be warrantied by 8yr/100K at least.

How is my math?

Dont drive to far in that leaf or you can add a tow truck into your formula that is why the Volt will kill this thing.

your math looks good to me.

net price aside, with a 100 mile range, this will make selling the Volt a HARD ROW for chevy, to people who want pure electric propulsion.

so if you don't live in california, and are one of a few hundred people it doesn't add up?

It won't save me anything causeI won't own one. My driving takes me consistently beyond it's limits and my car doesn't sit long enough for charges.

As with the Volt, this is about (1) Moving to the future and (2) Reliance on foreign oil (3) Emissions

Not so much about saving money. If you buy this car because you think you'll save money, you're probably not very intelligent.

The real benefit comes if you get your electricity from a clean source, such as hydro, solar or wind.

I like the Versa as it is a small, friendly, comfortable ride. Has everything you need to get from point A to B. Hopefully the Leaf will drive the same.Only thing is that it is so damn ugly. I mean really ugly. I saw it at the NY show and people would glance and look away. Its also very small. Not worth the money and hype.If a hybrid is that important to you,get a prius.

I'd still take a Chevy Volt over any hybrid or electric around.
