I still can't believe that Mercedes didn't have the sense to give Maybach it's own unique design language.

They did. They showcased the Mercedes Maybach concept in the mid 1990s and it was well received. The design doesn't look like an S class to me at all, but it's simply to elegant and bland. I don't find the Rolls Royce Phantom attractive at all but it's a Rolls Royce - anyone can see that. The Maybach looks expensive and premium, but I think people have a hard time relating the design a particular brand, since Maybach has been dead since World War II.

China has a big market for uber luxury barges. They like to be driven rather than drive themselves. It goes for most of Asia actually. I am currently in the Philippines and I get transported around in a Landcruiser Prado (Lexus GX)
