What Current Cars Going To Be The Next Classics?

What Current Cars Going To Be The Next Classics?
What does it take to be a classic car?

How about a design that spawns a generation of cars, or even creates a new class all unto itself?  Some true classics come to mind over the years:  The BMW 2002 launched the brand to stardom, or the Volkswagen Rabbit GTI that spawned a whole generation of hot hatch cars that still proliferate to this day.  How about the original Mazda Miata, that took the small two seat convertible to the masses with reliability and style.  If you go back a bit further you see the Datsun 240Z which still lives on as the Nissan 370Z.  Even Toyota has a few with the 2000GT and the Turbo Supra.

These are the cars that make you stop and look when you see them on the street. When was the last time you saw an original Lotus Esprit, or even a super clean 70’s vintage RX7? To the knowledgeable enthusiast these cars simply stand out in the crowd and quietly command the attention of those who know truly how monumental they are.  We aren’t talking of a Pebble Beach Edition here, we are talking about a pivotal element in the evolution of the automobile.

But you know if I look now, I can still see the stalwarts of a generation gone by with the Miata and 370Z carrying on the torch.  But I also see very few successors in the pipeline, everybody is going generic, plain forgettable is in and many of you don’t care.  After all can you really remember what a 2001 Corolla looks like? So tell me I am wrong, look out there and tell me what the future classics are going to be.  And let’s be specific, I only want to hear about cars released in the last few years, lets gives 2005 as a starting point, for our modern day classics.

What will you buy 20 years from now and tell your child this was the coolest car of the time, and that you begged borrowed to have this in your garage.

Of course exotics like Ferrari's and the 911 will be classics but I think the author is going for what mainstream cars will be classics. I guess maybe the Ford Taurus because of its impact on Ford's image, BMW 1series maybe, Mini Coopers for sure.

Nothing else really jumps out at me.

Of course, it is always the lower production options that become collectibles.

You guys need to read the article... we are talking new cars... not continuations like the 911, GTR, Camaro etc...

I think the BMW X6 will be a classic, as well as the Evora

Wouldn't be surprised if it won't be a repeat of 1960s muscle cars all over again. Basically any modern car with decent power will likely be in demand in a few decades, mostly because everything else will be so different. Just like what happened after the muscle cars were shut down.

I think you're right, Chrysler's SRT cars, Shelbys, ZR1, Pontiac G8 (perhaps), Pontiac GTO (maybe), Camaro SS . They all have the magic ingredients; high horsepower, relatively limited production and respected lineage. It's easy to overlook these cars because they are so obvious but the reason they're so obvious is because they are so right for future appreciation (both kinds).

None.

There is very little originality in automotive design these days. Sure, some designs look great but most everything is derivative of the what's already been done.

PerformanceGuy said GT-R, Joe said X6, and bfghemicuda said 300C (300C only, i hope you meant)so why are they de-boosted? For our time these are hot cars. Why wouldnt they be a classic 20 years from now? I guess with me being 26, I dont know what a classic is. I thought I did. Idk, I guess I will have to sit out on this discussion because *ssholes de-boost just because the button is there...

Its difficult to define what a current classic would be. I never thought the american muscle cars would be what they are today when back in the day we bought and sold them for hundreds of dollars and now they command hundreds of thousands and in the case of E-Body Hemi Barracuda convetable with 9 produced in 1970 and 12 produced in 1971 commanding millions.. Im not to versed in european classics but american classics are 55-57 chevy, early Chrysler 300 letter cars, late 60s Chargers, 50s and 60s Caddys and Mercury, 60s Mustang most of all 60s factory drag cars. Its really the current generation that will be the ones that eventually define these future classic cars. I choose the 300C because of its radical design and the countless aftermarket products available. The LX croud is young and in the high thousands. Time will tell.

Yea, I feel you. I bought a 2005 300 Touring in April of 04 but a year later got in a 300C. It will be paid off this month! I thought about trading it in but something is telling me to see what happens and keep it!

To be a classic, the car has to limited, unique for its time, and a combination of artistic creativity and technical innovation. I think all these cars embody this philosophy. Some of you have noted the X6 as a future classic, I disagree. The X6 "M" however is more likely.
