I'll wait for Gen 2, with integrated camera and everything else they omitted on purpose.

Well, you don't get all that for $499.

Give people an affordable taste and then grow the market with more products over time.

I tend to be from this school of thought...

http://www.roughlydrafted.com/2010/04/02/ipad-the-destroyer-19-things-it-will-kill/

The iPad prepares for a killing spree
DVDs.
eReaders.
Stacks of papers in office meetings.
Textbooks.
Netbooks. (Joe, Netbooks do NOTHING well...they have more features but are bad at everything they do)
PSP, DS.
Brochures.
Single-purpose industrial gadgets.
Other tablet-ish stuff.
The credibility of haters.
Flash and Silverlight and JavaFX.
Office.
Windows Media Center, set top boxes, Tivo.
Chrome OS.
Android.
Prospects for Windows Phone 7
In-flight entertainment systems.
Google’s ad monopoly.

That's all.

It helps when you're holding lots of the stock ;)

how can it destroy netbooks? this thing doesn't have a proper keyboard and has the same resolution as one of these micro computers. If I had $500 to spend, I'd pick this up and use it to take my notes, check my email, this site, and listen to my music. All while knowing I have a full operating system.

Jow- you are missing the point. Those who think it is an over grown iPod or a fancy Netbook really fail to grasp the concept.

Go and test drive one it is immediately apparent it is a primarily a consumption device not a PC.

Yes you can do emails and even short documents easily. Are you going to write a thesis on one? No more so than on a netbook. Neither device will do a good job at that, however neither device was designed for that either.

The new HP slate looks promising but the biggest problem is not the hardware which is impressive but simply the software that drives it.

Who really wants "Winblows 7" and all of the inherent issues with it, on a small casual computing device? Do I REALLY want to update virus protection daily? Do I really want to apply service packs and hot fixes weekly?

Been there and done that and I can say "No Not Me!"

I do! I'd rather be fighting with any potential issues then giving up with a lack of features/control all the while paying more for less.

Yep, just like the iPhone, right? I, as well, waited for Gen 2 (3G), and glad I did. While I was watching video at 3G speeds, the Gen 1 folks were still waiting for their web pages to load up. Apple shouldn't have to grow any market, they already have their own following and considered the top dogs in design and execution. You don't (or can't) get all that for $499? Yeah, right. I'm not falling for that one. Designed in California, made in China is it?

It costs less than $300 to build and they will make a killing off the apps, definitely not a great deal. They easily could have tossed in a camera and better processing power (especially graphically). Also, I can't believe they opted to include a non-widescreen display in 2010... major disappointment. Cool device, been needs some time before it becomes more than a fanboy toy.

Funny because I thought it was a great concept until I found out it WASNT a Netbook disguised as an overgrown iPod.

Dont get me wrong though, its still a beautiful (as with just about anything Apple) device. I think its going to be an "accessory" for me. Who knows, it might actually be more than that though. I usually get these things because its the "next" thing out. So to answer the question of the article, yes I am getting one. Im probably not paying for it as usual though...

I don't see how they're going to sell kindles now, the IPad is so much better.

It doesn't support flash, doesn't have a proper operating system, and doesn't have a front or back camera.

HP slate has it all.

ICD Gemini Android Tablet has it all PLUS making phone calls.

iPad = should be dead.. but the apple fanboys will buy any crap that company makes and think they just bought the best thing on earth.

Just like the unveiling of the iPhone OS 4.0.

Mutlitasking?
threaded email?
Touch to focus camera?
Zoom in camera?

All done before, around 4 years ago!
