RUMOR: WHO Wants To Speculate How Audi Could Make An R8 Even Better?

RUMOR: WHO Wants To Speculate How Audi Could Make An R8 Even Better?
This is not the first time we have heard this one.

Ah, the internet is a wonderful thing. But, it seems that rumors fly around here just as easy as the click of a button.

Word on the street is suggesting that Audi is up to no good and will be producing a hardcore version of the R8, which I do not think anyone would hate, as the recent R8 5.2 just about blew everyone's doors off.

But how?

Weight shaving? More carbon than ever? More engine mods? All of the above?

The latest says that rear-wheel drive is out of the question. With that said, where does Audi go from here?

Discuss...

Edmunds' Straightline reports:

It's just a rumor. I repeat, it's just a rumor. It is unconfirmed. But we have heard it more than once now. And we're starting to think it's true.

Audi will soon launch a hotter version of the R8. We're not sure if that means more power. We're not sure if that means less weight. Heck, it could mean both....

Porsche has the hardcore 911 GT3 and GT3RS. Why shouldn't Audi have a more-focused, hardcore R8?

They need to worry about the GTR and 911 turbo first.

I gave up my R8 4.2 for the latest Turbo and I don't regret it. The only thing I miss is the styling of it and the click and clack sound of the shifter. The exhaust note wasn't the greatest but not the best from a V8. The V10 is obviously a much quicker car but still can't match the Turbo. Based on feel and excitement the Turbo still hit the spot more. But the Lamborghini-like howl was sexy.

The GTR is in the mix too only in terms of performance. It is by no means an exotic but a very well made car from an economy brand. Its a good fun car to drive but heavy at times. But by far the best Japanese car in this era.

For Audi to want to compete against a GT model from Porsche they really need to think hardcore and let that quattro system go. They need a car for the purist.

Did Nobody tell you ?

The Porsche 997 Turbo is AWD.

So why should Audi Ditch the Quattro if the want to compete with Porsche ?

Make a 4 door R8.

Don't kill me, but here's my analogy:

current R8 : Ferrari F430 :: next-generation R8 : Ferrari 458 Italia

There's always room for improvement. I'm hoping for more revolution than evolution.

AUDI can make all their cars better by offering R W D.

Yeah

Thats why the Gallardo Balboni is selling more than the regular LP560-4

R8 is already near perfect and just love how it is. IMO R8 should stay in it's current price and Performance bracket as that would be beneficial for both R8 and Gallardo. Also both cars will have space and good selling points.

R8 should be = A Cheaper and more all-round/useful version of crazy and exotic Gallardo.

I agree with JUGNU here, if Audi move the Audi R8 5.2 V10 up the bracket, than it will go head to head with the Lambo Gallardo. And yes I know Audi own Lambo as well.

I don't it a good idea, unless they will bring out a more bada$$ of the Lambo Gallardo as well. And what about price range wise? Not a good ideas. I think Audi is trying to move this Audi R8 to fast up the foods change.

If it this new Audi do come out and cost as much as the Gallardo, I get the Gallardo over because of the Prestige I get from driving it. But if they place the price to low and if it performance just as good or better than the Gallardo, Lambo will lose sell.

My turbo fits in well with the super exotics at meetings I go to. My car is not a super exotic but it's still an exotic nonetheless. It's by no means a cheap car nor is the R8. I don't see that gap between the Lambo and Ferrari owners mainly because they all know the racing spirit of both and know what each company can offer. Also the R8 and Turbo both offer builds that are equal to it's more expensive counterparts. It's more of the badge than the build quality. R8 and Porsche have top notch building quality. I believe one of the very few elite in the world.

Um.......the Turbo has AWD drive just like the Carrera 4 no?

As for the R8 if I would change anything of course it would be the price.

Most people who say RWD have never ever driven the car. It's sublime. It's used for a reason and it doesn't hurt anything about the car. r8, 560, 560 sl, 670 sv, 997.2 tt, gtr... they all use AWD and are all incredible cars. Even that awesome 918 Porsche Spyder uses AWD.

Purists... pfffft. Audi would probably run Quattro in motorsport if they were allowed.

Besides, you can put the majority of the power to the rear wheels and easily spin the car off into the ditch by simply giving it more gas or even more simply by turning off the ESP.

Its how i know there are mostly kids on this site. I have had numerous arguments with people on this site about their fixation with RWD.

Funny how on the British Touring Cars the Front Driven Vehicles are Beating their Rear Driven Counterparts.

But some Clowns on Autospies Know Best.

1) the R8 V8 is overpriced for the level of performance provided. needs about 50 hp more.
2) the interior of the R8 is a rarity for Audi - not special at all - needs to have carbon and extended leather and they should be standard at that 115K base price. Put in carbon, radio, side blade and leather and you have a 130 - 140K car.
3) This is a car to buy with a stick because the automanual is clunky and certainly not at the level of Porsche's PDK
4) the car is becoming overexposed in the movies and TV. This halo stuff only goes so far. The epitome of ridiculousness is the new Carrell/Fey movie "Date Night". Crashing/Trashing an R8 just for giggles is consistent with it being a halo car?
