Toyota Goes On The Offensive By Testing All SUV's For Handling Issues
Toyota announced Thursday that is testing all of its sports utility vehicles after it suspended worldwide sales of the Lexus GX 460 due to a reported risk of rollover.

Toyota does not plan to suspend the sales of the other vehicles it is testing, said Ririko Takeuchi, a spokeswoman. But the company will suspend Lexus GX 460 sales.

Consumer Reports magazine warned readers on Tuesday not to buy the sport-utility vehicle because it could turn over in hard turns.

How about doing this "extensive testing" before you sell your kill machines to the public? Not that difficult.

Toyota test procedure:
Do the brakes work? (hmm...sometimes)
Does the car turn without toppling over? (erm...some of them)
Conclusion: Good enough for us! Sell those kill machines!

If that is the case how do rate the test procedures of the American companies?

Typical redirection from a Toyota owner or a Japanese person.

Actually this is a great move for them. They technically can be deemed rollover resistant and that is a plus.

Toyota is becoming very responsive due to the questions that have arisen on a variety of issues. To me this is a move in the right direction to cut off any marginal claims against them.

toyota can't be trusted to do the testing!

They will probably change something in the suspension design do the tests and go "see look there is nothing wrong with are cars Consumer Reports does not know how to test cars"

This is how toyota operates if you have not figured out by now! There is no limit on what they will do to save face. This is part of the Japanese culture!

Tuesday's announcement by Consumer Reports of a "do not buy" rating for the 2010 Lexus GX 460 due to concerns of a risk of rollover under certain conditions stirred up the stewing cauldron of Toyota's recent safety record. But according to a report out of Japan today, the company may already have a fix in hand.

The solution, reported as already in the works by the Nikkei, is to modify the vehicle's electronic stability control system--a simple software update. The report also states that from Toyota's (brief) testing, the RAV4 and Lexus RX (Harrier in its home market) will get the update, too.

While still unofficial--Lexus' latest announcement says they're still testing and evaluating the GX 460--the news could indicate a new corporate attitude from the lessons learned in the sudden acceleration/pedalgate affair. Lexus has already committed to providing a loaner vehicle for any concerned 2010 GX 460 owner until a fix is released.

We'll keep you posted on the fix as it develops.

Toyota has the worst PR people in the world, bar none. With each press announcement, they dig their own grave deeper.

Maybe in further cost cutting Toyota fired there PR team, and then stopped paying Consumer Reports, aside from these potentially true allegations I fail to see the safety issue here, It flew around the corner and didn't roll at all, obviously the electronics are not working, but if you need them you can't drive at all.

Truckman, I agree with you totally. Why would someone drive their luxury SUV like that? Stability control is just an aid for those "unwanted situations". The positive thing here is (I know a lot of Toyota haters will disagree) when Toyota comes out of this, they will have next gen products that are going to be better, safer, nicer, fun but sadly, might be more expensive. This is what happened in the 80s and 90s.
