Abandoning One's Youth? Parting Ways With A 914...
Michael Banovsky reports:

I always had the "cool" dad with the sports car. Sure, it wasn't much, but we used to go bombing around town in it, its flat-4 gurgling out the nearly open exhaust.

He sold the car today. And initially I didn't know why it bugged me so much. After all, a car is just a car…I remember my time in it, driving it, washing it, pushing it, and so on.

I think he saw it as a burden, a third car for the two-car garage. It has always sat indoors, safe and in slight disrepair, while one of the other family vehicles cooked in the driveway. It was always there, loved when used and unloved, dusty, cold when not....

I'm with you on that. I got the chance to drive one but never own one.

Those cars were wicked. Wicked fast. And usually, too wicked to handle at the limit, resulting in a quick visit to the ditch.

Simple and Fun. They don't make them like they used to.
