Has The Buyer Been Duped By The Automakers, Or Do Most People Have No Idea What They Want

Has The Buyer Been Duped By The Automakers, Or Do Most People Have No Idea What They Want
The typical American car buyer is completely bamboozled.

His priorities are warped, his perspectives skewed. He believes he must have features and equipment and capabilities he could easily live without - and probably would never even miss: 150 mph-rated tires; $300 a piece 18-inch wheels; 400 horsepower engines.

He is mortgaged to the hilt - so that he can fiddle with fussy, over-teched controls that make doing simple things (such as changing a radio station) difficult.

Yet he also complains about the high cost of cars, about not-so-great gas mileage and uber-complexity - all of which derive from his PR-bamboozled sense of what he Has to Have.

Just the other day I saw a TV commercial for the 2011 Infiniti M56. It has a 420 hp 5.6 liter V-8 engine. It can reach 60 mph in about 5 seconds flat and will run to more than 150 mph, flat out.

I know, it makes me excited too.

But (as we say in the South) lookee here, now. How many of the middle-aged urban/suburban manager/professional types who buy a car like this will ever drive it faster than 100?

Or even 90?

And how often will they do even that?

This is the most powerful Infiniti so far... you should ask the big 3 how many 500+ hp cars they have been producing. So why question the American way? :)

Is the "American Way" designed in France, excuted in Japan, and fueled in Venezuela?

If so, I think that's a good reason to ask lots of really important questions.

I have access to UK & Europe so 150mph driving is achievable.

On the other issues the article is correct.

Some of the features on some cars i have driven seem like a solution to a problem that never existed.

High Beam Assist- I can flick a lever when i need to switch between high & low beams.

Laser Guided Cruise Control- One of the worst Driver Aids i have ever attempted to Use, No matter what setting you use{Distance Selection}, the system is too slow to respond to the start of movement which means other vehicles will constantly switch lanes into the Gap between you and the vehicle in front thus making your car slow to maintain a safe distance thus falling even further behind causing another car to cut in and the process keeps repeating itself. { Same situation in 750IL / S550 / A8 }

Night Vision - Really.... If your sight is bad enough to require Night Vision, Please Park Up.

Lane Assist - Again if you cannot tell you are riding the line or within 5 secs cannot SEE you are out of lane, you have no business driving a car.

I955 I agree with your comments, but do you think this is the direction of the future where cars will drive themselves? Just a thought.

Unfortunately I do.

But as long as Small Companies keep making Vehicles, there will be regular vehicles for us. {Even if it means all I can drive is an Ariel Atom}

People strive for what they desire. They aspire for what they *think* will make them happy. May believe that happiness come from external sources, like the products and services that we buy. We believe that owning that new BMW will make us happy, so we strive for a decade to be able to afford it, and when we get it, the happiness is short-lived. We believe we need that bigger, newer car to make us happy. And we repeat the cycle.

Based on how few people have been able to attain lasting happiness, and how many people believe it is perfectly normal to keep on striving for stuff that "makes" us happy, I'd have to say the current process is not working very well.

Most people do not know what they want. But I'm not "most people"

Cars are capable of more than drivers will ever use them for bragging rights.

If you never go over 70mph but your car can do 150mph, you're not even at 50% potential. You feel good knowing the capability is there.

If you never go over 70mph and your car can do only 70mph, you've maxed out it's potential, and that's lame..."I couldn't go any faster if I tried" who wants to say that?

This isnt just with cars, its everything we buy. People buy computers that have features they will never use, expensive outdoor apparel that they wear to the mall, etc etc

I think that you're focusing on the fringe. Sure, there are a lot of cars with 400hp or more, but relatively few are sold. Look at a list of the Top 10 selling vehicles and you'll find that none meet the general criteria for your concern.

The biggest ripoff for most buyers is a high priced but rarely used nav and/or entertainment system.

When I look at the parking lot where I work, I pretty much agree with the headline of this article. Most people that visit this board are different than the average consumer. If you are here, odds are you know exactly what you want in an automobile.

While I drive tons of different cars, the last two cars I purchased required only a test drive of the exact vehicle to ensure it wasn't a reject. I knew already exactly the vehicle I wanted. There was no acceptable substitute available. I'd say I use both my automobiles to 70%+ their potential on a daily basis.
