Is Traffic Congestion Getting Better Or Worse In Your Neck Of The Woods? According To These Guys...
...it's getting worse.

For any gearhead, I am pretty sure the closest thing to hell is traffic.

And, for any city goer or commuter this has become a way of life, unless you punish yourself daily by taking public transportation.

But according to the Infrastructurist, it doesn't seem that things are getting better. You would think that with the down economy and fluttering auto sales that people would stick to the cheaper method -- the bus and/or train.

Wrong.

Infrastructurist reports:

How much time do Americans spend commuting in traffic? And how much worse has it gotten since 1997? The above diagram by Martha Kang McGill shows the number of hours a single driver wastes annually due to road congestion. The orange line indicates the loss or gain in wasted hours from 1997 to 2007. When it comes to worsening traffic, Texas is a clear winner, with Houston and Dallas both gaining around 20 hours in lcommuting time. All data is from the Texas Transportation Institute’s 2009 Urban Mobility Report...

I think that instead of the Federal Government making life hell for the auto makers they should heavily fine any city/town that does not syncronize traffic signals. This rediculor timing of lights to catch the oncoming traffic is a waste of time, gas, increases polution and causes people to attempt to speed up to beat the poorly times lights. If these cities and towns spent as much time figuring out how to get traffic moving instead of the surgical precision to time the lights to impede movement things would be a lot better.

You should come to Atlanta. They still use timers during the day. This one stop light near my job, the only means of legal egress from the area, has a 7 minute timer on it. And it's not even a high traffic area on the weekends. Talk about ignorant.
