Should The Chinese Automakers Be Held Accountable For Copycat Designs?

Should The Chinese Automakers Be Held Accountable For Copycat Designs?
Chinese auto manufacturers long have been known for, um, borrowing design themes and engineering concepts from more established Western automakers.

All it takes is a stroll through AutoChina 2010 in Beijing to see how blatant some of the vehicles are. I happened upon the shoddily constructed show stand of one such automaker, Huanghai Auto, at AutoChina and was taken aback to see unabashed ripoffs of the Lexus RX crossover, the Chevrolet Colorado pickup, and the Mercedes-Benz M-class.

The latter vehicle is known as the Huanghai Auto New Landscape. There's nothing new about this crossover's three-bar grille, though, because it's a poorly rendered version of the one that Mercedes introduced two years ago as a mid-cycle facelift for its M-class.

Well wouldn't mercedes and the rest of them copyright/trademark their designs? If so, why can't they sue the Chinese automakers for royalties? The Chinese are not ashamed, obviously, of being unoriginal. Americans surely won't fall for their trash designed to look like quality vehicles- then again their cars are not sold here- hope they never are

Lots of luck. after 60 years of communist rule, they have no concept of intellectual property. They do not view these actions as stealing anything.

China respects no copyrights, and yes they should be accountable. Try and tell the corrupt communist leaders, there people think that they are almost God.

Seriouisly, what constitutes an "original" design these days? Everything already looks like everything else.

Funny... I see more first-generation KIA Sorento than a Mercedes ML, but I see what you guys are complaining about.

huu message may seems harsh and borderline racist but the truth of the matter is, huu is 100% correct on this matter. I live and work in Asia now and the extent of copying by Chinese companies (big and small, private and state-owned) are beyond one's imagination. From food items, to packaging, to brand name, to advertisement (TV and Radio), to music, to fashion, to cars and whatever else you can think of. What's so sad is that the Chinese have no sense of shame, they see ABSOLUTELY nothing wrong with that, and WORSE YET, their copies are not improvements but made of inferior quality and standards (performance and safety). And if you think I'm harsh, jog your memory to phony drugs and milk products which killed their own people/children, on their own soil. And yes, I do place a lot of blame on Walmart on their cost-reduction pressure tactics.

The Chinese may be very educated but they lack one key ingredient to being competitive in the global auto market, Imagination and the concept of quality, so far none of the auto companies have nothing to worry about for a while.

The Chinese have proven...that they can do whatever they want...whenever they want, and we can't do a damn thing to stop 'em!

The Chinese copy everything that they want but don't already have. So do the Russians and other countries as well. We can complain, but they don't give a sh*t.

The Russian is smartest group of people? that must be a silly joke then. Let's look at their dumber part. The Chinese bought all kind of weapons from the Russian with an obligated technical transfer contract. Then the Chin copied the weapons right in front of them to the Chins. What else the Russian can offer to the world market? The American have also fatten up the Chin's pocket by many ways and everyone has seen. With a full pocket of dolls and owner to the American's debt, they are no doubt can go further. The Chin will not stop copying anything, that's the fact, and from any place on earth, even from a under-developed country from Africa. The world is afraid of China and it is obvious to see.
