Is Audi's A3 TDI REALLY Worth The $7K Premium Over The Golf TDI?
A base A3 2.0 TDI FWD S-Tronic runs $29,950. The VW Golf TDI we recently tested runs $23,090. In the review of that car we mentioned how the $7k discount for the Golf might be the way to go. After all, you can’t get this flavor of Audi with quattro AWD, which would differentiate the Audi  diesel from the Volkswagen. And both share a chassis, a 2.0-liter turbocharged motor good for the same juice—140hp and 236 pound-feet of torque—and get identical fuel economy as well, 30 city/42 highway.

But the counter argument is that you can get baubles with the Audi that the VW doesn’t offer. Options we’d find very hard to resist include the $2,000 Titanium Sport Package, which includes 18-inch wheels with 225/45-series tires, a tweaked suspension for sportier character, S-line seats in Alcantara, gorgeous piano black trim that’s way slicker than wood inserts and a black headliner that subtly ups the sex appeal of this cabin (and if you add up those seats, trim and headliner the entire cockpit is way hotter than the quarters in the VW).

The regular a3 isnt worth the premium over the Golf, why would this be any different?? The golf has equal interior quality other than the A3 having an oversized grill an audi badge, and different options that would make even more expensive I dont see the point.

bmwdrvr seems to have nothing better to do but look for an Audi article to post his misinformed biased opinions. For someone who so hates Audi he seems to be very interested in what they're doing!

It's all a question of a branding. These days there's really little difference between a Honda Accord and an Audi A4 from a technology point of view. The difference lies simply in the brand and how it's marketed. Having a load of history and heritage, like the European brands, are an essential aspect to prestige pricing.

You have got to be kidding me....

I agree that they may share some technology (power window/locks and some similar safety systems etc), but I would much rather drive an A4, does'nt feel like a cheaply made car and it is surely more capable of saving your life in a high speed crash

Audi Verse Honda

The Audi has Quattro all wheel drive and an engine mounted north to south, Honda has a an east and west mounted motor and is front wheel drive.

Audi has 2 piston caliper front brakes Honda has 1

Audi has crappier electronics, Honda has more reliable electronics

Honda Accord made in USA Audi made in Germany with tariff's and Duties

Audi has aluminum suspension components with advanced multi link set up at the rear and a double wishbone front Honda has Steal suspension with cheaper McPherson struts up front and a double wishbone in the back.

I miss anything?

No its not worth the premium. Considering over 2/3 of Audis sold are FWD. what can a FWD A4 do an accord cant do? answer..nothing different. The Honda 4 cylinders are just as well engineered as the VW/Audi four cylinder if not better. The Honda gets better gas mileage, and is available with all the same features, leather, nav, sunroof.

I cannot figure out why the A3 TDI won Green Car of the Year when the Golf TDI is essentially the same vehicle.

Will have this settled in a couple of weeks after my A3 TDI drive.

Why am I not surprised that people are questioning whether an Audi is overpriced or not?

A Honda Accord and an Audi A4 are essentially the same eh? Well.....I can tell you this, after owning both and visiting both Marysville OH where the Accord is built and Ingolstadt where the A4 is built, you couldn't be further off the mark there. The A4 is meticulously crafted using the highest quality materials that are leagues apart from what goes into an Accord. Don't get me wrong, the Marysville plant is a model of efficiencty and they do very good work building a good car but it's nowhere near what Audi does. Even the sheet metal in an Audi varies depending on stress loads and crash protection needs. Laser welding is not used at the Honda plant at all during my visit there. Much of the A4 forgoes the spot welding Honda does in favor of a robot controlled laser welding process which is many times stronger, making for a very safe and rigid chassis to work with. Even the leather Audi uses is Bull hide, twice the thickness of the stuff Honda uses and is dyed using totally organic process that doesn't wear out as quickly. I could go on and on here but I think you get the point. The engineering is on another level entirely. There will never be a factory installed engine producing upwards of 400hp bolted into a Honda Accord. The A4 may very well see an RS version someday in it's future so the chassis has already been engineered for that kind of power and speed.

Don't you understand that the Retards on this site are just that..... RETARDS.

They are armchair warriors, lots of opinions on vehicles they have NEVER DRIVEN nor have a chance in hell of ever sitting in.

I spend over £30,000 a year on Vehicle Rentals just so i get to Drive all the different types of vehicles manufactured and then i visit this site and have to argue with Cretins who never even set foot inside any of they vehicles we are debating over.

Getting back to the subject at hand comparing the A3 to the Golf TDI.No question a lot of this is branding. The Audi is certainly a prettier car and I think has a nicer designed dashboard. The other point is the availablility of options for wheels and tires etc where you would have to go after market with the VW. But no I would have to say the A3 is not worth 7 grand over the VW. It may be worth a couple of grand at most simply for the design appeal.

Uh, no. Buy the VW, extend the warranty and call it a day.

And the VW Golf comes with 3 years of free maintenance. Does the Audi? 'nough said.

I had to pick one of the two.
I did like the A3, but I got the Golf.

The deal breakers:
Manual Transmission not available on A3
New restyling coming soon
No SD-card and iPod connection
