10 Legendary Auto Flops, Can You Think Of 10 Future Flops?

10 Legendary Auto Flops, Can You Think Of 10 Future Flops?
MSNBC reports:

The recent news that Consumer Reports put the 2010 Lexus GX460 on its
"Don't Buy" list has already impacted the vehicle's future — Toyota has issued a stop-sale order on the $52,000 SUV and commissioned extensive testing to determine the cause of its failure.

The safety warning could also pose a public relations problem for the beleaguered company — the GX is the only vehicle to receive the "Don't Buy" designation since it was instituted last July. Only 11 vehicles have received the less-severe "Not Acceptable" rating since the list began in 1969.

But it's too early to call the GX a failure. That label could come after a couple of years of poor reception...

I don't the the GX460 will be a failure at all. None of the auto magazines that I read had any negative reviews of the vehicle, except Consumer Reports, which should stick to reviewing toasters and microwaves...

After all this blows overs, the GX460 sales will be fine. The dealers will probably receive their software flash next week, and just like the HS250h, people will forget about until something else goes wrong with a different vehicle.

I can't think of anything that will be a FLOP but I think certain vehicles coming out aren't as dynamic as the vehicle they're replacing. The 5-Series for example, just like the 7-Series won't be as sought after as the model it's replacing. Luckily for BMW a new 3-Series is right around the corner.

How could they fail on a car that already exist in other markets? It's a Toyota Landcruiser Prado. So if they are basing most parts on that car how can they mess that up.

I would venture to say that the 5 Series GT will be a flop along with the X6. I've driven the X6 and its a beast to drive but the styling is polarizing and its short on utility. The 5GT is just ugly...sorry Bimmer Boys thats just how I see it.

How is the X6 a flop? It sold out it first year and continues to sell well (better than the Lexus LX and Toyota Land Crusier). While the styling maybe polarizing the X6 has found it market.

The 550 GT is a flop

Almost no one on this page has been harder on the X6 than me, but it sells. Our local BMW dealer X6 sold out and have to be order in (except for the goofy hybrid) The X6M is months out. I don't get but the weird bastard sells.

The Lexus LF-A will flop. Not because they wont sell the couple dozen that they will make. But because their will be no cheaper follow up car, and the LF-A will not draw people into the dealership to but an HS. Completetly Different demographic. Its almost like Toyota Building a Sport-Motorcylce to attract people to thier cars.

"LF-A will not draw people into the dealership to but an HS"

Well the job of LFA most probably is to draw people into the dealership to have a look at the IS-F and future F models and not HS and LS like models. LFA is a sign that the company is going sporty(if they want they can compete with Ferrari and Lamborghini) and will soon come up with competitive world class AMG, M and RS rivals.

Wait, forbes considers the fiero and prowler 2 of the biggest flops of all time? lol

Prowler was cool, but the 3.5 V6 was not. Both vehicles were killed prematurely too. The '87 Fiero was actually a decent car. GM got it right by its last model year, then canceled it. Prowler was killed with Plymouth's demise.

Forbes knows nothing about cars usesd prowlers still command up to 45k
and Fiero's get up to 10k. Sorce = autotrader.

Prowlers still command up to $45K? LOL!!!

Even in the link you provided the most expensive prowler goes for $36k and some as low as $29,000. The most expensive Fiero's on that page goes for $6k, while the lowest is $3k.

Where are you getting your numbers from? It isn't from the link you provided. Or did you feel the need to exagerate (read:lie) to make your point stronger?

Uaw,

You confuse selling price with popularity. Just because something is rare and sells for a lot of money now doesn't negate the "flop" title. Lots of very rare and expensive old cars were unmitigated flops. They command high prices because they are rare and curious....not because they were great cars.

Same with M3's and S5's 009.

Are they failures too?

Can you show me where M3s are being discounted by $5k?

And the IS-F doesn't hold its value well at all. After a year the IS-F loses over $20,000 of its value. You can get a used IS-F for $41-45k. You wont find a used E90/E92 M3 being sold that cheap.

001, seriously, if you know of an Audi dealer that is discounting S5's by any appreciable margin, please let me know and I'll buy every single one of them. We have multiple S5 orders we can't fill. Not only are the new ones effectively sold out, used cars are bringing ridiculous prices. Check your facts, that's all I'm saying. However, I will mention that our Lexus store next door has several IS-F's that they would be delighted to unload at any price...

The Fiero had high sales, and you still see a lot of them on the road. Hardly a flop.

The Buick Enclave could be on the list of future flops.

I don't really see the LF-A as a flop... it is really just a big science project for Lexus... experimenting with carbon brakes, carbon fiber, and V10s to hopefully be implemented in future F-Sport cars.
