BMW 7er beats competition (Mercedes S and Lexus LS) in terms of sales!

And the winner is …. BMWs 7 series! The costumer voted with his wallet, and in the first quarter of this year, 7-Series sales in the United States tripled from the year-earlier period to total nearly 3,000.

With this top result, the 7-Series' U.S. sales surpassed those of the two major competitors - the Mercedes S-Class and Lexus LS sedans. Kudos!

BMW really has to do something about fuel economy on that engine, the only car in the class to have a gas guzzler tax is a big sales loser for some. Its the newest in the class so right now its selling the best but it wont always be and the last 7 with just 40 less horses didnt have a gas guzzler tax hopefully they will work on this and hopefully the 550i wont have this problem

that's why they just launched the 740i and 740li with the fabulous N55 engine. many luxury sedan buyers don't need obscene power and the 740 will be perfect for them. plus it's a bargain at $12,000 less.

I agree. But 7 active hybrid and 740i with turbocharged, six-cylinder-powered 313 horsepower (available as early 2011 model, starting at $71,025) are on the way! So, I am quite confident that the success will continue!

I got to drive a 740Li yesterday. I wasn't sure what to expect power-wise, having gotten used to my (lighter) 535xi and having spent a decent amount of time in a 750.

And you know what? I'll be damned if that thing isn't just quicker than my 535xi, it felt a LOT quicker. Push you back in the seat quick. I was shocked -- if I didn't know I was in a 740 I'd have thought it was the V8. And it was rated at 17/26mpg. Great job on this one BMW, that's a winner right there.

The 750 is a new model. The majority of the public (not car nuts like us) has just become aware of the 750. Plus the S and the LS have been on the market for a few years so people are used to their designs. The 750 has an all new and somewhat aggressive look and certain people like that.
It will be interesting to see how the sales race ends up at the end of the year.

they will continue to dominate with the introduction this spring of the 740 models. they're a deal in the $70s and have more than adequate power from the n55.

"aggressive"? I don't think so. The new 7 is a more conservative design that seeks to be as least offensive as possible, but it definitely is not aggressive. It's straight out of the Lexus school of design - play it safe. Although Bangle may have his detractors, everybody can agree that he did not play it safe and made attempts to push the envelope of design for BMW.

why is it referred to as a "7er" and not just "7"? Where did this nomenclature come from?

the german language. that's how they refer to all the series. 7er = siebener, 5er = funfer, etc.

Finaly the 7 is improving the sales..which is good for BMW, but honestly I think that it should be better, it tooks to long to reach this point against old designs. Again the beauty is the eyes of the beholder. The main reason cause BMW not having good sales lately is cars too ugly....Thats why hope they build the Grand Coupe (sedan for me) it looks very nice and the 5 series will help a lot..Lets see the next months but I do not trust too much on 7 sales.

The reason BMW is tops is because of its reliability and great customer service. MBZ has not mastered the reliabilty issue on its S class cars and we all have read the news reports on how Lexis/Toyota brand has been riding on ite reputation for years and now is facing the piper on lousy quality controls!

Check out ALLDATA numbnuts, S class problems with Nightvision, engine electonics, presafe systems. Hello, that's not evidence of reliability!

Doesn't surprise me, the LS and S are starting to show signs of age, and the BMW has all the latest goodies. Let's see how sales do when the new XJ and A8 come out and start snagging some sales.

I doubt that the new A8 or Jag will put any dents into the 3 major sellers. Although I love the LS, the new 7-series is a fantastic vehicle.
