Toyota Forces BOTH Senate And House To Rush New Safety Controls Into Law
Senators introduced on Tuesday their version of broad automobile safety legislation that would set new standards for stopping distance, push-button ignition systems, data recorders and electronic controls.
It also comes a week after House lawmakers unveiled their own auto safety measure. That draft bill will be the subject of a hearing Thursday by the House Committee on Energy and Commerce.
“Recent Toyota recalls showed an urgent need to update safety standards to reflect modern vehicle technology and give auto safety regulators the stronger tools and resources they need to protect the public. We can do better by the American people — and we will with this bill,” he said.

Agreed. 1-10 going through Pensacola is 55mph. Recently paved, straight and has 4 lanes. Everyone is doing at least 75 up to 95.

I'm all for safer cars, but I believe there is no substitute for a good driver. Training, practice, good decision-making, building skills in simulated accident mitigation and avoidance (e.g., tire blow-out, skid control), knowing how to use the vehicle properly (e.g., ABS), always being alert and drug/alcohol free -- All these things do wonders for reducing the number and severity of incidents. But they require the operator's effort and commitment, and it's something most drivers don't feel they should not have to do.
If you build an idiot-proof system, then nature always comes along with a better idiot.

Hmmmm... I'm gonna sound like a complete anarchist saying this... but...
To make the world a better place I would ban all distractions from cars, and reduce the safety restrictions placed on vehicles.
This would serve a couple purposes.
1. No distractions mean far more attention being paid to the road, meaning far fewer fatalities.
2. Fewer safety restrictions means cars can be built far far lighter, resulting in tremendous fuel efficiency gains and less kinetic energy involved in crashes... thus making them less dangerous. Honestly, does a vehicle need to be able to survive head on impact at a highway speed? Wouldn't knowing that a vehicle isn't perfect cause at least some subconscious thought that would lead to safer driving habits?
