Mercedes-Benz Steps Up Its Engine Game, Will It Be Enough?

Mercedes-Benz Steps Up Its Engine Game, Will It Be Enough?
Autocar reports:

A new range of more powerful, torquier and more frugal V6 and V8 petrol engines will be introduced across the Mercedes range from autumn this year.

The headline changes for the V6 are a new narrow-angle block and for the V8 a reduction in capacity mated to twin-turbo induction.

Both vee-engines also get third-generation direct injection with piezo-electric injectors, revised combustion, multi-spark ignition and low-friction ancillaries to cut fuel consumption by up to 24 percent.

Major changes are wrought to the V8, which gets a new, smaller-capacity block of 4.6 litres, reduced by 15 per cent from the 5.4 litres of its predecessor, together with the addition of twin turbochargers, arranged with one blower for each bank of cylinders...

MB finally upping the Power of the C350. I guess 3 years late is better than never.

Is this a coincidence they signed the deal w/ Renault-Nissan? Maybe that 3.5V6 is Nissan's VQHR35. :)

When I was shopping for a Mercedes CLK cabriolet, the thing that turned me off was MB's engines: Heavy, two and three valve, large-displacement lumps of iron that delivered power by brute-force cubes. Mind you, that was in the "old days."

Unveil a nturally-aspirated engine that puts out 100 hp per liter, and you'll have my undivided attention!

1995e34 write "you were shopping for a convertible, and you had a problem with heavy engines?"

Jeez, 1995e34, you focused on one or two words, while filtering out virtually everything else. Are you a convertible hater?

Interesting developments. I'm interested in seeing how they rename the S, CL, SL & E Class V8s. WIll there be an S 460? Or will they possibly go back to S 500 to keep the name plate? I'm sure the new V8's will be beasts, just like the current engines. Just with more and smoother power. The recently updated S Class with the new V8's will definitely one up (in power) the 7 Series. Can't wait for a comparo.

The F10 comes out in a month and yet in just 4 mos. the E550 will already be making more horsepower...... Not to mention the S550 will trump the 750 in autumn as well.

I don't get why they increased the hp in the V6 to 301 but didn't increase the torque to at least that. Would have been nice to see a C350 that offered the same power as a 335.......

MB puts a lot of consideration into engine durability and smoothness. More torque usually causes the engine to become rough.

Finally???? They have big making huge powerful engines the last few years. Who else has a 5.5 liter engine with 380 horeses and a 6.2 making over 500?

TauronB2G you are not realizing most people do not buy AMG models or 550 models the C300 only has 225hp and the 350 engines are only 268hp which are the volume sellers that make less power then many cheaper non luxury brands engines. The customer is really getting ripped off unless they buy the top of the line Benz, then they get their nuts tickled a little but but still have blue balls at the end of the day compared to the competition.

agent oor, what the heck do you mean, "will it be enough"? the c-class AMG easily out runs the m3 and the RS4....why the hell wouldnt it be enough?? wtf are you trying to say?

@KZ258

A lot of people cite that the C350 can't play with the big boys because it does not have 300-hp. Now that has changed with the horsepower bump. Same goes for E350.

By the way, a C63 is not beating an M3 around the track. It's already been proven.

Granted, the AMG will probably provide more tire smokin' fun.

we're talking engine power, not suspension.

engine = straight line

suspension = track performance

we're talking about engine.........."by the way"
