Brilliant Marketing Or Epic FAIL? Toyota Viral Video Tries To "Swagger" Its Way To A Younger Audience

Brilliant Marketing Or Epic FAIL? Toyota Viral Video Tries To
Just in time for Mother's Day Toyota released  viral marketing video featuring the fictional “Sienna” family” and their namesake, the Sienna minivan.

Watch as the Sienna Family drops their hot new single, Swagger Wagon. This goes out to all you minivan families out there who get a Sienna SE for space but fill it with your family’s swagger.

But I have to ask: is this the way that Toyota thinks they are going to get their vehicles appeal to a younger demographic?   Come on now guys, shouldn't I expect more from you than this?

The reason why this segment is dying in the first place is becuase there are many great "car based" suv's with the same and even more capabilities as a drab, uncool mini van and with better looks and resale value. You dont need middle aged white people trying to act black to sale them either.

It's awesome! Toyota did a great job! Great job hiring a mommy who looks great but also "real".

Can I have my 31 second back(thats I could make)! Just another cliched ad trying to make a "uncool" vehicle cool. Dumb, boring, and unorignal, I put it in the epic fail category.

lol I think its pretty funny, I think they failed at making the minivan cool I doubt they intended on trying to appeal to a "younger" audience as the post states its a minivan lets be real... but just to say a minican can be cool also. Either way I think it was funny stupid but funny Minivans do offer alot of things that SUVS dont form ease of entry to space for the price to gas mileage given their size but its just the stigma that comes along with driving one otherwise they make much more sense in many cases than something like a suburban, expedition or other similar sized vehicle

Ther are Suv's on the market that come very close to minivan mpg, what many people fail to realize that they both are care based now.

In fact the Chevy traverse carrys the same number of passengers and matches the sianna at 24 mpg hwy.

Exactly "come close" and carrying the same number of passengers and being able to carry the same number of passengers while offering a fair amount of cargo space and without the back seat being cramped is a whole different description lol and only something like a suburban, armada, or expedition like I said can really offer that type of space but they cant match a van on fuel economy. Personally, I dont ahve some huge family thankfully but I think I would go with something like the Flex if I did

I guess early 30's is a younger audience than Toyota is used to... I'm glad I'm still not in Toyota's target demographic.

i couldn't watch more than a few seconds of this... everyone involved with this nonsense should be very ashamed of themselves. it wasn't funny or cool. in fact, it was a little bit racist and I am offended. that was like a blackface mistrel show, without the actual blackface makeup.

No. I absolutely hated 'White Chicks', the Wayans brothers should be ashamed of themselves for dressing up like women to entertain 'you people.' they are shucking, jiving, singing, dancing, smiling, cooning bufoons, who do not have any self-respect. they are a disgrace as men, to themselves and their race.

and SNL hasn't been funny, or worth watching since the early 1980's. I also usually have better things to do on Saturday nights, so I haven't seen that show in years.

Dude the whole thing was shot in black AND white! What could be more racially harmonoius than that?

Simmer down.

IT WORKED!!! as far as an interesting audio and visual. I beleive it weakly connected the Toyota to the consumer. I bet everyone here watched to the end, and smirked. I cannot recall a catchier car ad ever.
This may breed interesting competition.

yes, Eminem is extremely uncool. and what does age have to do with anything?

jpighettijpighetti - 5/11/2010 6:14:56 PM

Age has to do with the fact that you think SNL hasn't been funny in 15 years. That's age talking. Tastes change, gramps. Not everyone thinks Samurai Optician or "Two wild and crazy guys!" would be funny today.

The fact that you think white people rapping is racially insensitive is just ignorance and stupidity talking, and shows your uber-shallow appreciation of music. Clever lyrics and a catchy beat...the fact that the song is about a minivan is irrelevant.

I liked the beat, not a fan of the actual song. I thought it was kind of cute, but it really didn't really evoke any reason why I'd want one...

The whole thing is meant to be ironic.

It's geared to the same hipsters who laughed at Strongbad, but now have children and need to drive a family car. The video is allowing those people to make fun of themselves while still holding on to their sense of humor and superiority. Those white, early 30-somethings look ridiculous rapping about a mini-van, but that's the whole point. The demographic Toyota is going for aren't the type who would buy an SUV in the first place. Some people think it makes them complex and cool to drive a mini-van or station wagon. They embrace their 'uniqueness' as a badge, it's cool to be uncool. I'd be willing to bet Toyota is aiming at the people who need to trade up from their Vespa scooters.

Earth-tone sweaters and black rimmed glasses are the fashion norm, and you can fit a lot of organic produce from Whole Foods in the back of a Toyota Sienna.

I would rather die then wind up waking up next to that monstrosity every morning forever driving a stupid minivan...this man must cry before he goes to sleep and pray he doesn't wake up IT!

Ford flex is car based and is a lot better looking than any minvan.

@Pushrod: Are you black (not that it matters)? I am and I dont see what was so offensive about it.

@Badgewhore: "White people rapping is never cool, they just can't get it right, always ends up annoying and insulting!"

Are you serious? From Eminem to Asher Roth, white people can get it right when rapping is actually their thing. Take that Vanilla Ice tape out of your player, that is NOT what Im talking about.
