Official: Mercedes-Benz unveils new V6 and V8 engines
Nowadays, consumers don’t look at power alone when deciding on what car to purchase. More and more consumers also consider fuel economy and emissions level.

In response to these changes, Mercedes-Benz has introduced two new engines that offer improved performance and economy. The 3.5-liter V-6 engine boasts of gains of 38hp and 24% fuel economy. Meanwhile, the V-8 engine raises output by 43hp and fuel economy by 22%. These improvements place the new 3.5-liter V-6 at 306hp/272 pound-feet and the new 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 at 435hp/516 pound-feet.

so does this mean that the S500/550 would now have a 4.7 twin-turbo V-8? and the 350 series would also be replaced with a 306bhp engine?

"since when do horsepower figures make a car a luxury car?"

- HP doesn't make a luxury car. But for the price of the car? HP is a luxury that the car should have imo.

I love how the V6 is still not as torquey as the new mustang's V6 on cars that cost 2-3 times as much.

wELL FOR 40-60 GRAND Depending on C, E or ML classes you would think the motor would be competitive or beat other car makes, it can't beet BMW's turbo six, or fords, or infiniti's or anyones! So yea it is pathetic they are making a mediocre products that match the competition but not beat the competition.

penn...

Your comments are just dumb. Why does MB have to make a motor that competes with a Ford Mustang's motor?

As per your second dumb comment, I'm sure 90-95% of the people who purchases these low end Mercedes are not worried or concerned about performance figures that would "Beat" (spelled B-E-A-T) its competitors. As for Mercedes, I'm sure they do not have to push an engine's HP/Torque figure in order to get people into their cars...

I'm quiet sure Daimler Benz has been in the marketing/car business longer than you have been living so they know what they are doing. Moreover, they have people more qualified to make the decision than you as to what to put into their vehicles...

Lastly, if you do not like it, then great, don't buy it. I'm sure Mercedes wouldn't miss your business...

Hey 'Spies, fill me in, will ya? The numbers on these engines appear to be "good," but not noteworthy. Am I missing something? Are these engines miles ahead of BMW's, for example, or is this news because these engines are "new for Mercedes"?

News because MB finally is almost caught up (at list in my opinion especially when it comes to the 6 cylinder motors) I feel that no current MB is worth buying unless it has a V8 under the hood... I will be interested to see how the C350 Coupe when it comes out compares to my 09 335 Coupe. I sure hope BMW starts offering start/stop technology on their motors soon too.

What about the person that doesn't need a V8 or a V6?

I drive a C230 V6 and I love my car. If they sold the peppy the C200 Kompressor here I'd be first in line for one. My C230 feels overpowered for my needs and my driving style.

Folks,
This is a C350, E350, and ML350 we are talking about. They are not performance cars by any stretch of the imagination, and it doesn't matter how much they are priced at, because people will still buy them. Stop thinking your car is superior just because it has 50 more HP...

What is intersting here is not the Power....is the "economy" a V8TT 4.7 with 435 hp and 24.7 mpg is amazing... all other v8TT are under 20 mpg. Power is not surprising coming from MB..but economy is another story...

All this bitching about the "weak V6" is truly pathetic. 306-horsepower are adequate. The 268-hp E350 even feels faster than some of its 300-hp rivals such as the Cadillac CTS and Acura RL. People who buy E350's don't care about beating other cars at the drag race. What is impressive about this new V6 is the technology and layout (60 degree V banks).

Some of you boy racers shouldn't talk when it comes to luxury cars. Looking at the horsepower figure is no indication of how good or how bad an engine is. None at all. Hell, with intelligent gearing, weight reduction and engine management this 306-hp V6 in say a "revised" E class could be the quickest car in its class - not that it matters. Most shoppers in this class could care less which car is the quickest in its class. Most don't give a damn about which car has the most horsepower etc.

Another thing. Look at the emissions figure of this motor: 177 g/km. For comparison, a Lexus IS350 releases 278 g/km. Now that is IMPRESSIVE. This is what we should be praising, not the 306-horsepower output, which is already more than sufficient.

you got to be kidding me right? Speak for yourself bro. I'm NOT going to paid $60,000+ for a MB and than get spank by teenie weenie in his or her Kia, Hyudai, Honda, Scion, Nissan or Toyota. You need good amount of horse power and torque to be able to change lane, merge and exit the freeway.

Not sure where you live but in the U.S. especially in California it a good idead to have a V6 engine with 250+ hp. Because it help a lot if you do most of your driving in the Freeways.

Lexus,
Obviously, you are missing the whole point of a Mercedes. If you are in a Mercedes and you are still worried about "getting spanked" by a kia, hyundai, etc, then you are just an idiot and are buying the wrong Mercedes, or are in a Mercedes for the wrong reason.

If you want an MB that will perform, grow some balls and dish out some cash to get yourself an AMG model.

As for the second part of your comment, I'm not sure where you are getting the "V6 with 250+ HP". I'm not too sure if you know this, but the MB M272 V6 was producing 268 HP since 2004... Or is that news to you???

Welcome to the V6 engine 300+ horse power club MB. Lexus was the first to have over 300+ hp under the hood with the current Lexus IS350. Than Infiniti came out the G37 with 300+ hp as well and the BMW 3-Series 335i with it own 300 hp under the hood.

what took MB so long to put a 300+ hp under the hood with a V6 engine.

"hat took MB so long to put a 300+ hp under the hood with a V6 engine."

The fact that they don't need it... And please don't say most people won't buy a MB with under 300 HP, because obviously, if they didnt, then MB wouldn't have sold so many C-Classe...
