NHTSA Investigates Toyota For Second Case Of Witholding Evidence

NHTSA Investigates Toyota For Second Case Of Witholding Evidence
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is launching an investigation into whether Toyota Motor Co. delayed telling investigators in 2005 that a known defect on compact trucks in Japan was also a problem in the United States.

Toyota later recalled the trucks in the U.S. for a steering relay rod that was prone to cracking.

The automaker had recalled trucks in Japan for the problem in 2004, according to the current probe. As required by law, the company reported the action to NHTSA. But in that notice, according to the agency, Toyota informed NHTSA that it had received no complaints of the problem in the U.S. and that differences between trucks sold in Japan and the U.S. -- as well as different operating conditions -- meant the issue wasn't a problem here.

I agree but they do need to find out if they have a history of doing this. (and why wouldn't there be one?)

If we see a pattern then it becomes quite obvious that they consciously chose to sacrifice customer lives in the name of profits. At the point the $16 million cap for a fine must have an exception. That is nothing to a company as large as Toyota.

It would be a shame for Toyota customer to have been betrayed by the very company they trusted wholeheartedly.

weakling900- I like you! You are not afraid to speak your mind. Wholeheartedly? Heck yes, quite a few on this site drank the elixir and believe Toyota/Lexus hung the sun, moon, and stars and can do no wrong. I think the term would be idealists.

You, however my friend, are like me and believe most any company will do most anything to make a buck. Buyer, beware.

Great for the NHTSA they have to investigate deeper to know for how long the hide and keep secret to theirs customer.
I am not a toyota customer and I never will, and I also try to keep my whole family safe from things that is not well done.

Say weakling009, 'yota had no problem riding the bullet proof rep they had for all these years. But like a lemming you conveniently want to believe your own twisted, obnoxious version of what "truth" should be.

What a powerful case study you make for NOT drinking from the Kool-Aid fountain of delusion!

Inline 6 all consumers are so called "fair weather friends" when it comes to my money and my family's well being there is no way I would spend my hard earned money on a car that could kill us as it did dozens of others this year. Your so called few issues is one of the biggest down plays I've ever had the pleasure to laugh at. If you enjoy a company of death deception and a Wal-Mart like company motto all at the cost of the America people than you are either a worker or part owner of this despicable company.
