Hyundai Genesis And Mercedes E-Class Round Out Large Luxury Car Top Safety Picks By IIHS
The Hyundai Genesis and the redesigned Mercedes E class, both large luxury cars, earn 2010 Top Safety Pick awards. The award recognizes the vehicles that earn the top rating of good for front, side, rollover, and rear crash protection, and that have electronic stability control, which is standard on both of these cars.

The Genesis was introduced in the 2009 model year. During the 2010 model year, Hyundai made changes to the roof structure to improve protection in rollover crashes. The Top Safety Pick award applies to Genesis models built after January 2010.

The E class was redesigned for the 2010 model year. This is the first time the E class has earned the Institute's top safety designation. Earlier this year design changes were made to the padding in the front and rear doors to improve protection in side impact crashes. The Top Safety Pick award applies to E class models built after March 2010.

The Genesis aced everything. It really looks like they took out the stop and decided to build a real competitor. Mercedes did nothing other than what is expected from them, quality and safety.

The Genesis competes directly with the 5, E and GS - RWD, mid sized, luxury sedans. Some badge whores wouldn't think of the Hyundai in the same breath as those models I just mentioned but that's who Hyundai is gunning for.

Good job to the MB 2010 E-Class and a Huge Congratulation to Hyundai for keep on improving your cars. Toyota, Honda and Nissan better keep improving their car and product before Hyundai catch up and surpass all of them.

Anything can happen, only time will tell what is going to happen in the near future.

Getting good crash test ratings is simply expected for cars of this segment nowadays. The only glaring exception is the 5-series, which did poorly in both the IIHS and EuroNCAP tests.

Oh and the 5-series did poorly in the NHTSA's test too.

BMW are light cars which is good if you are looking for the ultimate driving machine...I.E. M3, but no for the other cars. Most of the BMW tests are "marginal". However I have a question for FanboyOfTheTruth: is that test for the latest 5 series?...Everybody knows that the previous was marginal but what about the latest generation?

Heck if I'm paying almost $60,000 for a vehicle it better damn well ace all the safety tests. Kudos to Hyundai for getting the Top Safety pick by IIHS on a sub $42,000 car.

Badgewhore: "Isn't the Genesis just an avalon competitor and not a luxury car?"

Im so ready for this day to be over I cant even respond to that like I want to. NO THE EXTENDED CAMRY IS NOT A GENESIS COMPETITOR...

Hyundai is amazing because they made the car stronger, literally, for 2010 and gave the roof more structure reinforcements and added 10 more hp to the V8....
for 2011 next year they are adding the 8 speed gearbox in 2012 they are adding warp drive and dilithium crystals
