Breaking: Bmw X4 will be based on the new X3 compact crossover

As you may know already, few weeks ago we heard for the first time about the new Bmw X4, a new baby X6 if we can call it like that.

It appears that this rumor is starting to get shape on the Internet… and today, the Dutch magazine Autovisie reported that Bmw is considering the small model and this will be based on the new Bmw X3 which will hit the market in 2011. In fact, the new Bmw X4 will be the X6 version of the X3. Why is Bmw considering the new X4?

Hmm... well, and I'm merely trying to play devils advocate here (I can hear the thunderous roar of X6 haters on the horizon already....)

The 1 series is available in 4 body styles
The 3 series is available in 4 body styles
The 5 series is available in 4 body styles (yes I'm counting Li and GT)
The 6 series is available in 2 body styles (3 in future - gran coupe)
The 7 series is available in 2 body styles (standard and LWB)

so... who says that SUV's/SAV's can only be available in 1 body style?

... personally, there are other models BMW should focus on first (Z2 and 6erGC/8er, possibly a supercar).. rather than an X4, but I do see the appeal.

Seeing the new SRX and the Q5, an X4 that could essentially be a 3/4ths X6 is a good bet.

BMW realized that similar thinking a made the new X3 to be a 3/4ths X5...so do the same with the X6-X4 relationship. BMW know that a lot of people like the X5/X6 designs but either can't afford it or hate the fuel ratings. Maybe the smaller versions with better fuel ratings will make that purchase a lot more acceptable and will net a whole lot more customers...definitely so.

If they style it right, and price is right, it will be a winner. The X6 is very popular over here, even though its quite expensive.

i dont care what anyone says, i love the bmw x6 even though it is a useless sports suv.. i think the design, especially the x6m is very eye catching in a good way...
im not an suv guy, and the x6m is one that i would love to have ( if i could afford it )

I have the same opinion I like the X6 but is expensive so my future option could be the possible X4 so will see but the design is just beautiful.

i bought a 2008 X6 and it was awesome. i got lots of compliments on it and it was rare that i saw another one. i think it looked great. it wasn't quite as "useful" as an X5 would have been due to the bucket seats and sloped lift gate... but i still liked it. then some chick ran into it and i got rid of it. :-( the X6 was pretty expensive though. i think a smaller/cheaper version would do well.
