More details about Bmw’s front-wheel-drive vehicle
BMW breaks tradition as it launches first front-wheel-drive hatchbacks in 2013 as new entry-level models to its lineup. These new vehicles will be based on the next-generation Mini platform and will be slotted below the 1-series, which will continue to be produced as a rear-drive family of hatches and saloons.

In addition, the new front-drive hatches will carry 1-series badges, meaning that buyers can have their choice of BMW’s entry level (either front or rear-wheel drive). Despite having the same badges, the two families of models will be distinguished by their unique sheetmetal and price positioning.

As I have often said, the people at BMW have lost direction. They need to stay focused and stop tryingto be everything for everybody. I am neither a proponent or an oponent of either front or rear drive, but there are things that have been "BMW" over the years...the kidney grille and rear drive are two of them.

I realize this is a rendering, but looking at it I realize what a design liability the twin-kidney grills are for a car of these proportions. To stay BMW-like, the grill has to maintain its proportions, but on a car with this short a front end and the current fashion of driveway-scraping air dams, you either have to slope the hood radically to keep the grill from appearing too high or live with the big expanse of bumper underneath. The only thing somewhat saving this from looking like a frowning little piggy is the license plate. The body's fine.

Another ugly car?....It is not enough with the 5GT, X1, X6 and 7 series?

That is a poor poor rendering... accurate or not even the proportions don't match up on that vehicle.

As far as FWD BMW goes, I don't like it.. but I can see the reasoning.

At some time over the next 10 years, a saturation point will be reached.. BMW, Audi and Mercedes are all introducing vehicles to fill every gap... is this sustainable in the long term... I don't think it is.

"At some time over the next 10 years, a saturation point will be reached"

I think that when some technology takes hold that produces zero-emissions at the tailpipe, they will at least be less pressured to have small cars. But, even then they're always going to have to contend with the economy-of-scale challenge--unless they decide to go "boutique"; charge more than their current competitors, offer fewer models, produce at a lower volume, and count on exclusivity to raise profit margins.

i really question whether the will have fwd as well as rwd 1-series variants. that would just be ridiculous. why not use the isetta name for the fwd model?

From that angle it looks like a BMW with a big front overhang now..

Smaller than a 1-Series? Maybe BMW could call them the Half-series?

Another stupid move by BMW. Putting aside the fact the car is horrendous, they are introducing a model to compete with the Mini, they're own brand. I think they see the A1 coming, the demand overwhelming, and the sportiness overwhelming the Mini and they need something to counter.

they're=their

another point, WTF with the FWD? wasn't BMW supposed to worship RWD only? I guess profits always overweight anything else.

What is BMW? A car company. I am not a business major but I am pretty sire that BMW is owned by a bunch of people who only see profit, money and the personal positive financial end result as the only thing that matters. Shareholders and CEO's and top decision makers sometimes are not the car enthusiasts as you guys are. Do you think they read autospies (no offense) or the Wall Street Journal? Some (not all) of these people don't give a crap about heritage, history, legacy and such things. in fact some of them come from an entirely different company or market, they just know how to look at spreadsheets and paperwork and say this and that will bring in more money. They look at their personal wealth and as long as that's going up, the means are justified. Gone are the days for which companies were founded out of passion and product delivery was a synthesis of that passion, craft, and pride. I personally don't even care anymore. Some of these business folk are in the company for 10 years, at the end of it, they leave with a couple of millions while we here at autospies bicker, girl and fight over their decisions over cars we sometimes can't afford. lol. Life is great! Not to come at these business owners, or financial folk because they are just doing their job. Only a few can be car enthusiasts. BMW manufacture millions of cars a year, if BMW was really a car company for enthusiasts, they will only build custom cars per personal order. Buy what you like and if you don't like the way things are run, go to biz school, drop about $100,000 a year on tuition (I attend UPenn and have a few friends at Wharton) then come and run one of these companies to your desired outcome. Shareholders will eat you alive. lol. They always want more, and that translates into the products, more of what we want and more of what we don't want. Then again, i might be entirely wrong
