Who Will Rise Up To Challenge The E-Class As The Best Soft Top Luxury Car?

For many prospective customers, convertibles conjure images of cold drafts and windblown hair, a stereotype Mercedes hopes to overcome with the introduction of its new E-Class Cabriolet.

The mechanical wizards in Stuttgart have concocted technical cures for these age-old problems, making top-down driving pleasant and fun in temperatures that would normally cause us to reach for the button to raise the roof.

The scrappy underdogs at Mercedes will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the company’s invention of the automobile next year, and their accumulated proficiency is evident in this latest model, which retails for almost $74,000 as tested.

Nobody can challenge MB!!!

"Let’s take Mercedes as an example. Currently they can offer you a massive range of cars, each of which is available with a choice of trim levels and engine sizes. I’ve done a quick head count and, amazingly, your local Mercedes dealer is able to offer around 300 different models.

And now it gets tricky because, on average, each of those models is available in a choice of 10 colours. So now it’s 3,000 models, and that’s before you get to the colour of the interior trim.

Mercedes is famously mean-spirited in this respect, and once you’ve chosen a colour for the body you only get about five choices for the colour of the seats and carpets. Even so, that means we’re now up to 15,000 different models, each of which is available as a manual or an automatic. So that’s 30,000 then, and each of those is available with probably 50 different options. The result is that Mercedes-Benz is able to offer you 1.5 million different permutations of one car. "

Really !!

Because from my limited knowledge VW/AUDI has an Impressive Range to choose from.

From VW Lupo to Bentley Mulsanne & Bugatti Veyron.

From Audi A3 to Lamborghni Reventon

I would not even begin to list all the different models between the ones above.

I think you've got him cornered, I95. If he acknowledges that the range from Lupo to Veyron is greater, he loses. If he maintains that all those other rebadged VWs aren't really VWs, he loses. Smart.

@I95
I'm talking about only one brand - Mercedes and you're talking about 8 different brands:
Volkswagen
Skoda
Seat
Audi
Bentley
Lamborghini
Bugatti and even Porsche, because VW-Porsche are connected.

It's like talking about Ford Motor Co. few years ago:
Ford
Mercury
Lincoln
Aston Martin
Jaguar
Volvo
Land Rover

It's not about VW Group with all connected brands, it's about only one brand.
BMW, Audi, Jaguar, Lexus, Infiniti, Acura and other luxury brands haven't such a long model line like Mercedes. That's what I'm talking about and that's what JC's talking about in his article!

"Best Soft Top Luxury Car"? That category includes the Maserati and Bentley (including Continental) as mentioned as well as the Rolls Royce Drophead and you could add Aston Martin DB9. Needless to say, most anyone would rank them as more desirable than an E-Class Convertible?

personally I wouldn't count those as just luxury cars, i would categorize them separately, something like super or uber luxury category.

Actually, I would take an S5 Cabriolet over the E-Class. Same price range.

I think it would be really hard to actually compete with MB who has done really well in this market (CLK for example). I think it would be really interesting to see someone like Lexus turn the next GS into something like the E class. Offer a sedan, coupe, and a convertible option. I think Lexus could give MB a run for its money but I don't see anyone knocking MB out of this segment

Saying its the best soft top luxury car is giving it way to much credit their is a whole line of other cars I would put there first namely the Grancabrio, Rolls drop head coupe, db9 volante, xkr convertible etc...and plus its nice looking car but I just think its a Woman's car I would probably take teh S5 convertible over the e class if I was shopping for a soft top.

The next generation Lexus SC, based on the next generation GS, will.

Lexus claims that they'll give the SC a soft top to give the vehicle more design freedom. Personally, I feel that well designed soft tops aren't compromised in terms of looks if not considered beautiful and classy.

What's all the fuzz about? The title clearly was structured to incite a flame war.

I like the E class cabrio - more than the coupe. It's a sexy ride. refined, sporty and comfortable. To many people it's very desirable. Also, who the hell compares a Bentley or Maserati Grand Turismo to an E class coupe? That's a whole different class of vehicle. Geez...

I would take an S5 over this without question. Nice Benz though, the A5/S5 is stunning in person.

The A5 and Eiclass coupes-convertibles are the best looking in its segment. But Mercedes has been in this game for a long time esp. In the SL range where I don't think they can be touched.

Hey agent63,it's bias I know but I just love it, and with the DCT is perfect. Of course the E class cab is awesome, but they should have used a hard top instead of the soft top. These days I think a soft top only works for the 911.
