Toyota President Questioning Their Ability To Keep Up With GM And Hyundai

On top of this quagmire of troubles, Akio Toyoda has also recently questioned the company’s ability to remain as one of the front runners in the industry. The Camry, for example – one of the mainstays of the Toyota brand – is possibly on the wain against tough competition from the Ford, GM and even Hyundai.

“Look at the Ford Taurus. It may be making a comeback,” he commented. “GM also has Camry fighters. And they’ve been done with a fun-to-drive touch. And Hyundai is coming up, and they’re looking good. So we have to start asking, ‘Can we just keep doing the Camry like this?”

"And they’ve been done with a fun-to-drive touch."

and...

"Can we just keep doing the Camry like this?”

Very wise words, maybe Toyota does have a non appliance future after all?

I've driven a Camry SE. They are not fun to drive, not even close. And I've never heard a single reviewer proclaim that any Camry was fun to drive.

Reality Much?

I've driven the FWD V6 Camry and I stand by what I say. The only thing I'm blinded by is experience. And I couldn't care less about the Hyundai.

The V6 Front-Wheel-Drive Camry with Sports Tuned Suspension may (or may not) be a better handler than the Sonata, but that's about the only car that it can handle better than. FWD? No differentials? Give me a break. Have you seen the slalom and skidpad numbers for the Camry? The SE sports tuned suspension is a joke. Camry's have never been known for their driving dynamics. They are appliances. Unless you know something that the rest of the world doesn't? How's that for ignorance?

Badgewhore,

You are funny! Drifting on a straight road? LOL!! Why I'm I not surprised that the Toyota's aren't even actually negotiating a turn? LOL!

BMW! you better watch you out. The Camry is coming for you. LOL!!

Badgewhore,

That video was such a waste of time I couldn't even get past the first few seconds of it, I've seen Minivans drift. What does that mean? So I guess that the Camry is a Sports-Sedan now? LOL!

Oh yeah... Stop trying to bait me into some BS Back-and-Forth. You're a waste of time just like the video you posted.

reliability + fun to drive + above average style + affordability = BIG HIT

Toyota has reliability and affordability down, they just need to kick it up a notch in the style department. The "fun to drive" factor is pretty easy: tune the suspension, re-program the transmission and add direct injection/turbo.

The Camry isn't more affordable than the other cars you listed. But that isn't going to stop the Toyota Dummies from de-boosting you. :)

Akio Toyoda is the president of Toyota, therefore he needs to look more into how the value & action of the company as a whole should advance. The issues such as how Camry could become superior again will take care of themselves once his true priorities are in place.

People who shop for Camry's don't care about fun. They care about value, reliability and fuel economy. The Camry is the perfect car for them.

Car enthusiasts loathe the Camry because it's targeted at a certain niche of people who just don't care about "driving" and having "fun".

Their is a lot's of blind customer that they don't want to see the reality so be ready to take your own consecuences. Open your eyes and choose the best one.

"The result was a workforce overstretched by demand and a lack of resources to check on quality. Further to this, the company lost sight of, and communication with, the customer, as well as failing to communicate internally between individuals, departments and global offices."

- How can someone think that a company going through all of this, could still be the best at anything? I'll answer that: Blind Fanboy Pride. LOL!!!

I definitely agree with you on this one, at least you use common sense and logic to back up your comment. Instead of making idiotic comment because you like a certain brand like some of the badgewhore up here.

I'm not a fan of any brand. There's good and bad with all brands. Since all manufacturers have thier ups-and-downs, I could never understand "Brand Loyalty". Seems more like blind faith.

And whats wrong with not liking Toyotas? What have they done for me or anyone else to like them? And I don't label everyone who disagrees with me as a fanboy. I just mention the word and out they come. I know who the fanboys are. And saying that I sound stupid calling a fanboy a fanboy, isn't going to stop me from calling a fanboy a fanboy. Nice try.

In order to set up a car for drifting, you have to change components that would make a car handle well to ones that don't. Well handeling cars do not want to drift. Try drifting any F1 car.
