Time to clean house in the GM marketing and advertising department?

AUTO SPIES PERSPECTIVE: If they need to resort to this stuff to figure out what to do, then it speaks volumes on how out of touch their marketing and advertising people are...

Twenty-year-old Jenny Ecclestone of Novi had never seen a 2007 Chevrolet Aveo. Nor had she ever developed a public relations program for a new car.

General Motors Corp. gave her the opportunity to do both.

Ecclestone competed with 32 other college students from across the country to come up with the best PR campaign for the redesigned Aveo, which debuts this summer as a snazzier version of its predecessor.

"It was definitely intense, having only one hour (to devise a campaign) and then our presentation time was cut to five minutes (from the original 10 minutes), and then our computer died," said Ecclestone, a sophomore at Michigan State University.

Maybe this is where that got that sweet marketing campaign for Saab. You know the one that is so catchy you just want throw a shoe at the television.... "Born from Jets!" What the Fu$%@&. Do they actually think this sounds good.

Needs some kind of wake up call. Sure I know they are having issues with retirement, healthcare, blah blah blah....But even if and when they get all that under control, they will still have issues. Their vehicles are still ho-hum boring (save a very very few, Corvette, Solstice, Some Caddy's). THey need to WAKE UP and spend money on design and let these designs get to the showroom floors without all these beancounters redesigning the concepts before they get to the manufacturing stage. GM has had some really great show cars, only to never be seen again or to come out horribly different. Hopefully GM will produce the new Camero not far off the concept car. It needs this to spice up their image. They also need rear wheel drive big Sedans in both the Chevy and Buick lineups. THey need to just take a chance and really design something....desirable. What the heck? THey are already in trouble, what would be the big risk in designing something people would actually wanna buy?

log on to Autospies.com and read what people think. For my part, I consider the "born from jets" commercial about the 9-7 more than just puffing - GM has strayed into the outright fraud territory. The only thing the 9-7 was born from, was a 20 year old GM truck - no jets involved.
