STUD or DUD: Is Jeep's New Grand Cherokee Enough To SAVE The Brand?

STUD or DUD: Is Jeep's New Grand Cherokee Enough To SAVE The Brand?
Admittedly so, I may not be the most enthusiastic when it comes to American automobiles. But this new Jeep looks awesome.

I remember when I first saw it at the New York Auto Show, it looked good inside and out, and the material quality blew my mind. Stack this car next to a Dodge Challenger and you will simply laugh at the muscle car's appointments.

An American car this good? Yeah'p, it finally had been done.

Ultimately, who cares about my excitement? What do YOU think?
  • Is this the right direction for Chrysler?
  • Are you interested in this Jeep icon?
  • Does the interior meet your standards?
  • Can it stand up to the competition?

CNN Money reports:

The 2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee was first unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show but Chrysler has never shown it again since, not even in a photo.

The carmaker's new leadership has said the Grand Cherokee needed more work and, besides, there was no point to showing off a car months before it went on sale.

So, on Friday Chrysler will host the official unveiling of the new and even more improved Jeep Grand Cherokee on the same day it starts production of the SUV at its Jefferson North Assembly plant in Detroit.

Executives promise better quality, inside and out, better ride and handing and better fuel economy. Click through the gallery to see what's new...

Jeep is fine and the new Grand Cherokee is too. Correct me if Im wrong but Jeep doesnt need saving. Its parents do.

I guess I should have clarified that I mean Chrysler by "brand."

A single vehicle cant save a company as a whole. If this was true, the 300 and Charger should have saved Chrysler.

@Lacman

Although you have a point you have to look at it from this perspective. The 300 and Charger did not make huge strides in material and build quality, which is what this new GC does -- or is supposed to do.

Oh yeah, and the GC will not be the "IT" car for the moment or a trendsetter.

I see what you are saying now...

If chrysler goes down so does jeep. Jeep is a chrysler product as is dodge. Jeep is not its own brand like it was when it was AMC. Like wise, if GM went down all GM brands would unless an investor bought the rights to a brand and saved it.

I am not sure I agree.

A lot of speculation has said that if Chrysler did go under it would be likely a Chinese brand could take over and continue the Jeep nameplate.

Chinese?!? No!!!!!! I was thinking (or hoping) someone from Europe would take them over. (as well as Cadillac if GM was going to go down)

It's an SUV Chrysler needs a hit small car like Ford has done with the Fusion and GM plans on doing with the Cuze in the US and already is a hit in Europe. Suv's are only popular when gas is cheap.

I like it a lot from a styling POV, inside and out. It looks like a pretty good car too. Chrysler seems to have stepped up its game.

I'd be tempted to buy one if it also came with more economical engines like a diesel option for example.

I would like to see an off road version of one of these with two selectable lockers and 35 in off road tires, with loads of wheel travel, that would save Jeep, the Rubicon is one of my favorite and one of the only true SUVs, the rest like this one are cross overs.

Hear hear!, how about solid axles to boot.

I have to agree with the two solid axles, although I am not completely opposed to independent suspension if it is done right, so far no company had ever produced anything that I would say WOW to, the Raptor is the closest to getting it right with the IFS, but 1.6 inches of additional front wheel travel just doesn't have me wetting my pants, although they are going in the right direction.Race trucks have 30 plus in. of wheel travel with IFS and usually solid rear axles for the trucks, I would like to see a company just go half way! 20in of use able tuned race suspension, No company gets it,All that wheel travel would give you a smooth ride.

It is a very nice cross over.

Very nice design, but Chrysler needs new product across the board in order to survive.
