Should They Get It? UAW Now Wants A Slice Of Tesla

Should They Get It? UAW Now Wants A Slice Of Tesla
UAW President Ron Gettelfinger said the news that Toyota and Tesla would tie up to build an electric vehicle at a Fremont, California, plant formerly operated by Toyota and General Motors GM.UL was "welcome news."

Toyota and Tesla announced on Thursday that they would cooperate in developing electric cars, parts and production. Separately, Tesla will take over the New United Motor Manufacturing plant -- widely known by its acronym NUMMI.

"Our union's hope is that this venture will give first hiring preference to former NUMMI employees who are already trained and highly skilled," Gettelfinger said in a statement.

It's easy to say that but as always there is noo facts or figures to bag it up. I would be in full agreement with anyone on this subject who provides real solid proof to support a statment such as the one HSC just made.

Since when did quarterly/annual financial statements not count as facts and figures?

UAWlackey, with California's unemployment rate at 13%, Tesla has no need to hire back unionized workers. The talent pool is probably quite large out there. Also, there is a reason why so many manufacturers (BMW, Mercedes, etc.) are building or have built in factories in right to work states in the South. Car manufacturers shouldn't be hindered by unions (ie hostile third party groups whose end function is most often the opposite of the company and its shareholders).

Remember, no one is entitled to a job.

HSC... maybe you did not know and there is a lot that is not in the eyes of the public about the auto industry, that many workers at nummi where not in the UAW. Like you said no one is entitled to a job but if you worked hard for 10 plus years for a company you among many things should be rewarded for your hard work. Many of these workers have double that time and Union or not should be considerd for there original jobs again.

Its the management that takes most of the $$ I am for the working middle class, pretty soon we will all be working for nothing and the corporates will have all the money, how much did the corporates get for bonuses during the bail outs? It was outrageous! Soon we will all be homeless and the extremely rich will own us all.

UAWlackey, union workers demand wages and benefits that are far above the market rate. And nothing explains this better than the looming insolvency of many public, unionized pensions plans. Teachers unions are already asking for a federal bailout.

The whole economic down turn had nothing to do with the unions, it was your privately owned Federal reserve that messed the world up, Just ask Greece, they have a pending law suit on your banks.

The UAW has no plans to have Tesla join our ranks. We are only suggesting that the workers who workeed for Toyota in NUMMI union and nonunion rightfuly get thier jobs back. The same thing would be fair for any occupation/industry.

Should have figured UAW-(ex)Lax would be trolling UAW blog. What do you mean "rightfuly get their jobs back" (I even mispelled the same word as UAW-Lax did). Nobody "owes" you a job. You think just because you have UAW on some badge that someone "owes" you a job. You should have smelled the coffee years ago when you and your kronie UAW friends were building JUNK back then. Now that car companies have downsized their workforce to become competitive, you're worried your UAW fellows won't have a job. Some things never change with the UAW members.

UAW_LAX, can I see your facts and figures that proves that it is better for a car company to use a unionized work force?

This is precisely what messed up American car companies so much, that a huge proportion of the car's price is used to pay salary and benefits (look at the gross margins on the income statements). So You buy a $25k European or Japanese car and you get waaaay more bang for the buck by not having to pay for union extravaganzes.

Want to destroy shareholder value and the chance to make cars at a profit then go ahead and hire union workers.

No facts needed not to hire Union. Simply because there are way too much conditions with union workers and as soon as the car company makes money, they want a piece of the action and eventually, car companies will have to cut corners just to maintain profit margins and shareholder values, etc. Its GM, Chrysler all over again.

I love how the UAW threw Toyota under the bus after they closed the plant after GM went under. Now they want to play with the new jobs. Good luck.
