Toyota FT-86 debut to be made in 2013! Hybrid version planned!
It appears that the same thing that happened with the Lexus LFA Supercar will happen with the new Toyota FT-86. For those who don’t know, the Lexus LFA was first unveiled in a concept form back in 2005 at the Detroit Auto Show.

The production version was launched last year at the Tokyo Motor Show. The new Toyota FT-86 will likely have the same faith and people will get tired of waiting it! According to the latest reports from Japan’s Best Car magazine, the Toyota FT-86 will make its debut in 2013.

Now correct me if I am wrong. But on the surface it looks like they are repeating the same mistakes as the LF-A.

An ultra long gestation period typically means a car will come to market either outdated, or outclasses in a year or two.

I am correcting you. You are wrong. How is the LF-A outdated or outclassed or how will it be in a year or two?

You are correct 009. Some folks here have a hard time accepting reality. Especially when it comes to their beloved brands. I have no such hang-ups. LOL!!

The LF-A looks like a car from the late 90's or early 2000's. There's Nothing awe inspiring about it's design. Maybe 10 years ago it would have looked fresh, but now it looks dated. And as far as it being outclassed? The Ferrari 599 outclasses it (while costing less, LOL!!).

And the FT-86 appears to be a harmless, underpowered, 2-door coupe. You'd be better off with a Genesis Coupe. Subaru made sure that thier version will actually perform, Toyota couldn't care less.

lol I always find these hypocrits hilarous.... how can you say what this car is going to be and that another car is better based on pictures... lol there has been no test of it hell they havent even given an exact price. As far as the LFA looking outdated it certainly isnt the best looking supercar, and given its price I was expecting alot better performance numbers since its priced above established prestigous brands car's but the car's styling has evolved throughout its development process. I certainly can understand not liking Toyota and lexus but at least be logical.......

LAME! I just hope this doesn't delay the Subaru version as I was never interested in the Toyota version to begin with.

When the current gen z06 using street tires can keep up with the LFA with non street legal tires, I think it's fair to say the lfa is outclassed in terms of performance. Style however is purely subjective, if you like the cut up non flowing lines of the LFA then I guess that's ok?

Z06? Hello? 7:49 compares to 7:30 of LFA? Do you know why there's ZR1?

There is no ring time for the street car.

And the numbers motortrend found for both cars...

0-60 in 3.8s for both the LFA and Z06
1/4 mile in 11.8s@123.7mph for the LFA and 11.5s@127.1mph for the Z06
60-0 in 94ft for the LFA and 100ft for the Z06
1.05g's for both the LFA and Z06

If it's such a joke, tell my why there are about as many ZR1 corvettes sold as there are 911's of all model variants?

"When the current gen z06 using street tires can keep up with the LFA with non street legal tires"

Nice selective picking. That LFA was pre-production model so there might be some final performance tuning left which give some extra tenths.
And what would you say about RWD LFA being 4 seconds quicker on a very wet track than AWD Lamborghini Gallrado in the top gear test.
Also AutoCar magazine said LFA is better and faster than 599 HGTE package which costs exactly same as LFA at $375K. So much about stock 599 outclassing LFA.

lol, so you're telling me that a 560hp car from 2010 on a moist track is faster than a 493hp car from 2003 on a wet track. Shocking lol, that's what I call selective picking.

I like how that was the only number you were able to use.

Joe_Limon:
Did you actually watch the episode? The LFA was spraying water everywhere. Even Hammond said the track was "wet, very wet".

Also the 599 never got close to breaking 7:40 at the Nurburgring Nordschleife, let alone 7:30 that the LFA did. The 599 is outclassed by the LFA by a long shot.

I watched both thank you, and the lambo kicked up a much larger spray of water.

Toyota is a bizzare company indeed! Why 2013 thats a retarded decision.
As for Agent009's statements regarding the LF-A's styling and other whinings about it, Show me an AUDI that can compete, then you will actually have something legite we can debate about!

Joe

LFA has 50BHP more than Gallardo so it should be 0.5-1 second a lap quicker around a dry track. In wet conditions AWD Gallardo has the advantage but RWD LFA is 4 seconds a lap quicker(so in dry conditions where AWD will not be too useful LFA would be at least 5 seconds a lap quicker). That is where 5-6 years newer technology comes into play and the selected 500 customers are satisfied, who wants more can opt for more track focused package. If you are not satisfied get/like something else but LFA is surely not disappointing and outclassed by rivals.

50hp? no... try again, more like 69hp at the crank... and the gallardo with its awd gets another power disadvantage since they are less efficient, so at the wheels the difference in hp will be much closer to 100hp. Throw on top a heavier weight and tada you have a heavier far less powerful car that is nearly a decade older, hell if it wasn't for the average performance the lfa puts out, I'd say kudos to lambo for only being 4 seconds off.

BS Joe: Try 0-60 in the rain in RWD, then post your SxxT.

the damn test wasn't done in the rain, it was done on a moist track. That's a large difference.

Whatever floats your boat. I wish that Toyota would at least make one exciting vehicle. But if you are OK with thier current boring line-up? Then you are the perfect Toyota Customer.

More delays...sigh.

Whilst I do recognize that they 'enthusiast' market is not the market as a whole, there has been a lot of interest in this vehicle, at least as it was orginally spec'd. More delays seem to me to allow even more room for Toyota to rethink their position, and castrate this potentially fun little coupe even more.

With lines like "Toyota will take a closer look to Honda’s CR-Z hybrid sports coupe and may consider a hybrid version of the FT-86!" that makes me wonder if they have looked at the luke warm reception the segment-confused CR-Z Hybrid has been receiving in its pre-pro form. Its not not got great FE, nor does it have good performance, straddling a line of 'ho hum' in a segment that (again, at least for that nebulous enthusiast market) is currently turning up as 'meh' thus far. The FT-86 and/or a truly sporting new-gen CR-X/Z had my interest for a fun weekend car, but the lackluster hybrid thing, and TMCs continual delays of the FT-86 are really putting those thoughts towards other vehicles.

This is speculation from a car magazine, this isn't inside info.

until we see toyota state that they're postponing the FT i think it'll be here late next year. if there is a hybrid version it'll be the year after.
