Is Honda Starting To Losing Its Competitive Edge Too?

Is Honda Starting To Losing Its Competitive Edge Too?
It's unusual for Honda Motor Co. Ltd. to deviate from its rigid model-replacement schedule,
particularly for its bread-and-butter volume models such as the Civic. But that's just what the company is doing with the planned Civic replacement, pushing back the car's introduction from this fall until sometime next year.

The next-generation Civic apparently was not on competitive target - and Honda sent it back to the garage for some tinkering. Although some analysts and industry insiders think Honda's choice to rejigger the Civic is a positive signal, the fact the Civic has to go back to the drawing board at such a late stage speaks plenty about how far Honda has drifted from its once-indomitable methods.

Mr. Honda is probably rolling in his grave right now. Sad to think that the bean counters ruined what was a great start.

Honda lost it's competitive edge about 10 years ago.

Seems like a while back, the idealists and visionaries that served the big Japanese companies so well, lost out to the bean counters. They followed the American companies so well they are falling victim to the same issues.

I think you are referring to Toyota.

How can you call yourself a journalist when you don't understand the proper use of the words "its"?

Simple typo, which has been corrected.

You might want to correct this one too -

Is Honda Starting To Losing....? Should be "lose"

Foreigner wrote "How can you call yourself a journalist..."

They don't! The "Agents" are more akin to bloggers, not journalists. I'd bet that they do their stuff for the the soap-box and bragging rights over beers (if someone were to raise their eyebrows to "I write for Audospies"), and that no paycheck is involved. I speculate that No.1 draws income from ad revenue.

I think these guys are sad. They hate this site so much, yet keep posting on it.

looks to me that 009 has done his job and done his job well. His job is to get you guys talking and visisiting this site a few times a day. So if that means twisting the wording of a article well geuss what he will do it. Honestly for this site to get better a certain few people should be true to themselves open up better channels of communication and leave the name calling for Myspace.

It seems to me that Japanese companies are extremely innovative within given constraints, but once they reach the top and has to innovate from a complete blank sheet they may begin to struggle.

I would disagree with that though not my type of car the Civic, Accord, and Camry are completely redone what every 4 years or so thats an extrememly quick turn around and not just to make a warmed over version of the last model but a better version each time I would say thats innovation...

I would like to see the Honda come with the direct injection tech for more HP and fuel economy, yes they are not leading any more in the engine department, although still good, just not cutting edge.

As tough as competition is in the Civics class I think its very smart. The Civic doesnt just completely dominate the rest of the cars like it used to, it has a long line of great competition nowadays and coming soon I think by giving it more time they are being very competitive.

Trying too much to please the american market I guess... just like Toyota. When I was a kid, there was nothing as cool as a Civic Si, a Golf Gti, a Mazda 323 GTX or even Corolla GT-S. If you didnt have much money, the civic DX and regular Golf where cheap an fun cars. Not the case anymore, except maybe for the Golf but the 5 banger is one lazy powerplant. Can't have fun with that.

Now you can have a 2.0t RWD cool looking Genesis coupe for the same price of a Golf 2.5 Comfoftline.

I'm not too much into Hyundais, much more into VW but I think some well established maufacturers are ready for a reality check...

If you actually read the article, it's quite a dismal outlook for Honda. Seems no one at Honda is paying attention, or cannot shift planning to reflect reality. I wish they would go back to the drawing board and take their talents and use them to regain their stride.

I tend to agree that Honda is not garnering the attention normally gained before the release of their Civic. Not sure whether the reason is malaise from economic downturn or the Korean car companies are releasing more eye-catching models lately (Huu, don't attack, I'm just referring to their look, not saying anything about the Korean long-term quality or innovation).
