Executive Says GM Will Strive To Match Audi Interior Quality And Style

Inside Line met with GM's Karl Stracke, who took over as the vice president of global engineering when Mark Reuss left to preside over GM North America. During the discussion, Stracke admitted that although General Motors has made progress on the interior quality front, it hasn't come far enough.

"We're not yet at Audi quality," he said. "I want to be at Audi quality. Audi is the benchmark for interiors."

whatever hurdle they are trying to get over its a tough one because it will be very hard for ford to match Audi quality beingthat the materials they use are high standard but i think they are putting a huge challenge on their hands

Why don't you go sit in an A8 and actually see the Screen in Operation ?

Then come back and comment.

I think he's talking more about the fit of the interior than the physical material. Obviously the next chevy aveo isn't going to be coming with standard premium leather, wood inlays, and aluminum trim. But I can still see, even for the lowest models, how audi can be an inspiration. since a lot of the interiors are shared, to some degree, between a couple brands, it isn't completely ridiculous to aim for better interior build quality in the design which could be spread throughout several cars. In the case of cadillac it makes more sense to talk about aiming for all around audi interior quality. Hopefully in the next couple generations of the cadillac lineup we will be seeing near audi quality interiors, it could really bring them to the next level.

I'm just sick of this "Audi is the benchmark for interiors" thing.Only Audi A8 has a very nice interior.....the rest just look the same.

Interesting how GM has picked Audi as its benchmark for interiors. My own entirely subjective tastes rank Audi's interiors as amongst the best, especially the dashboard and driver-car interface.

By comparison, BMW's interiors of late are very "fashionable," but less functional (e.g, declutter the dash to make it simple, by putting the clutter in iDrive, and adding more complexity than the original problem).

Note to flamers: I am stating my highly-subjective opinion, and not asserting that this is the world as it is, so BMW Fanboiz don't have to get pissy.

How are they going to get the "Audi Like" interiors past the bean counters?

They're gonna need it.

Ward's releases 2010 Auto Interior Award winners
by Jeremy Korzeniewski (RSS feed) on Apr 12th 2010 at 5:58PM

Do you own a Lamborghini Miura? If not, we're going to presume that you spend way more time looking at the interior of your car than the exterior. If you do happen to have a Miura parked in your garage, we suggest you stop reading immediately and go gaze upon its sensuous exterior lines for a few hours.

Still here? Great, that means you don't own a Miura and the interior of your car is an extremely important consideration. Which begs the question: What car has the best interior in any given class? Attempting to answer that query is none other than Wards Auto, which has just released its annual Auto Interior of the Year Awards for 2010 after analyzing the innards of 40 vehicles that are either brand new for 2010 or at least significantly updated.

Somewhat surprisingly, the only automaker to take home more than one trophy was Chevrolet. The new Equinox won for popular-priced truck under $39,999 and the Camaro took top honors in the sportscar category. Other winners include the Subaru Outback in the popular-priced car under $29,999 category and the BMW 5-Series Gran Turismo for "Design Versatility."

Want to see the rest? Check out our high-res image gallery below for a visual listing of all the winners and click past the break for the official press release.

I remember Lutz bragging about the interior of the new Equinox.Ya, it looks nice, but damn it still has tons of cheap plastic everywhere.I was thinking about maybe buying one or a Terrain in a few months.I also sat in a new camaro ss over the weekend. Was shocked at the cheapness also of the interior. They got a LOOOONG way to go before they even get close to Audi.
