These glorious numbers do not translate well into real-world experiences because regular drivers drive to get from A to B, in traffic, with stop signs and traffic lights. These real-world factors mean that a real-world driver cannot use the driving techniques (uninterrupted pulse and coast, without regard to speed) that are required to duplicate these stellar numbers.

Just like with a gasoline engine, the way you drive makes a HUGE difference in your energy consumption, be that gasoline or electricity. It's one of the primary reasons why Prius drivers don't get anywhere near optimum fuel economy.
