Germany Prepares To Tell GM To Take A Hike And Fix It's Own Problems
General Motors received a setback Tuesday in its effort to secure €1.1 billion in German aid for its money-losing Opel unit after a government panel declined to endorse the request.

The government-appointed group of outside advisers took a “very critical attitude” on G.M.’s application for the aid, valued at $1.3 billion, Economy Minister Rainer Brüderle said at a news briefing. “The advisory panel’s recommendation will carry major weight for the further decision-making process.”

“We cannot possibly tell the people, ‘You have to put up with higher costs while we’re propping up a company like G.M. that is perfectly able to cope by itself,”’ said Michael Fuchs, an alternate member of the Committee on Economics and Technology in Parliament from Mrs. Merkel’s party. “I don’t expect the government to grant aid.”

The US should follow suite and demand all foreign automakers to repay the money it has lined them and all of the tax breaks they have received.

I see what 'upwards' was trying to say. But it's not a fault of the foreign companies that the federal govt and individual states granted numerous and hefty tax breaks to them. In the majority of the situations where tax breaks were granted, they were done so to further entice the foreign company to do business in a specific area. And these tax breaks were just ammunition for the individual US states to compete among themselves for foreign business' promises of additional jobs and funding for their communities.

Just kill opel if it's still not making money then. If the German government actually wants it around it will subsidize the profits it is failing to make.
