Next-Generation BMW 6-Series Cloth Top: Is It REAL Or MEMOREX?

Next-Generation BMW 6-Series Cloth Top: Is It REAL Or MEMOREX?
As you may have seen earlier today, new spy photographs of the upcoming 2012 (?) BMW 6-Series convertible have emerged on the web today.

And, it is quite stunning.

Clearly the vehicle is drawing a lot of influence and design cues directly from the Gran Coupe Concept that emerged in late April.

More interesting, however, is that the car will be coming equipped with a softtop OR -- as rumors have implied -- a factory folding hardtop. This is weird considering the 3-Series convertible comes with one standard.

But, from the latest spy shots, 001 is thinking this softtop mule could be a fake.

What say you, Spies?

MB offers the SLK with a standard hard top and the E Class convertible is a soft top, so this is no first if the new 6 remains a soft top- guessing they are hiding the fact it will be a hard top...

BMW was known for the soft tops I think the soft tops look WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAy better than any hard top convertible crap. The soft top shows off the lines of the roof has a much cleaner look than the erector set/lego look the hard gives you plus it gives you an extra customization step when you want to do a one-off car by changing the color of the soft top to where the hard top would look retard if its not painted the same color of the car and the hard top will give the car a few extra pounds because of the weight and reinforcement that needs to be done. I think companys should go back to soft tops hard tops to me is a FAD and they are starting to get old like spinner wheels IMO

B7FAN,

You actually think that the soft-top pictured above looks nice? And those protruding support beams make the roof look so smooth. lol!!

FWIW I think that the soft top on the 6-series looks horrible and throws off the look. And who the hell wants a cloth roof? this isn't 1960. That car only looks good with the roof down. With the roof up it resembles a modern car with a 1970's VW beatle convertible style cloth roof. Fail!

The large plastic ridge under the top in the trunk area is suspect to me.

I think when it's launched it will have been a curve ball and it will be a hardtop convertible.

For that kind of money, it should be.

The "Large Plastic Ridge" is also on the Current 6-Series Cabrio.

I prefer the soft top - more classic, lighter. Sure, a hardtop has improved stiffness but for heavens sakes, it's a convertible that will cruise the boulevards and as a BMW I'm certain it's stiff enough for the kind of aggressive driving that 99% of its users would put it through.

Pads under rear of top, hide the seams for the folding hard top, either that or it is just really bad work!!

boot lid seems too long to be a hardtop. otherwise it would be one odd looking side profile, certainly no better than the 3-series cabrio.

Front end especially nose and headlights area looks very close to the Gran Coupe Concept. New 6 is already looking better than current 6 series but that shouldn't be a tough job.

Looks better than the current model, but I'd still probably take an E550 Cabrio
