Mercedes-Benz Sales Gain Momentum With Impressive 26.7% Increase In May Sales
Mercedes-Benz USA today reported May sales of 19,176 vehicles, an increase of 26.7%, continuing the second quarter with a 25.8% increase on a year-to-date basis.

Impressive gains were made in both the Mercedes-Benz passenger car and light-truck categories. The strongest performer of the month was the 9th generation E-Class -- which expanded to include the wagon and cabriolet models -- with sales of 5,476 (up 140.7%).

The company's flagship sedan, the S-Class, marked increased gains with sales of 1,085 (up 21.2%) and the newly introduced supercar and brand halo -- the SLS AMG -- reported strong initial sales of 168. The top performer on the luxury light truck side was the versatile M-Class SUV with sales of 2,264.

On a year-to-date basis, the company sold 87,970 new vehicles, an increase of 25.8% over last year.

Separately, through the Mercedes-Benz Certified Pre-Owned (MBCPO) program, MBUSA sold 6,964 vehicles in May; a 0.4 % decrease compared to May 2009 sales of 6,992 vehicles. Year-to-date sales for the MBCPO program were 34,898, a 5.9 % increase over 2009 year-to-date sales (32,951 vehicles) during the same timeframe.

No surprise here...

The new E Class has taken many sales just from the fact the new BMW 5-series was not available yet.

What a stupid comment. But that's no surprise since it's from David999. The E class has always sold strongly in the United States, just as the 5er has. Clearly, the E class and 5er appeal to most people shopping in the luxury class. Can't say the same for the cramped sardine can known as the Lexus GS.

The E-class once again has proven that it is the bread and butter of Mercedes, beating the C-class sales for the month, a huge feat considering the price difference. I seem to think a lot of those sales came from the aged CLS more so than the 5-series. Mercedes owners, like BMW, are incredibly loyal.

What the 3 is to BMW, the E is to Mercedes Benz.

They clearly are loyal to that badge--so much so that they dont even LOOK at the car itself. I will never understand how anyone could even be seen the new e 'class' let alone buy one.

Design is subjective. I like the new E class from a design perspective.

I've driven the new E350 and it's really spacious and comfortable - things that matter to people. The A6 and GS, which I have also driven, are great cars, but they're cramped inside and lack the overall balance of the E class. The E class is a car that is well balanced, meaning it has more strengths than weaknesses. These strengths are what sell the car, not the performance. Out there in the real world, people don't give a damn that an E350 isn't the quickest in its class.

Agree absolutely. All new E class looks ugly and bland both exterior and interior. Don't know why it is still selling so well(here in Dubai too), i guess because of the famous E badge. Very popular with people entering luxury class for the first time. I loved the classic styling of previous E class and kept E55 many times but new E's design is just too boxy and sonata-like.

Jugnu,

The E-Class sells well because it is a good car. As Willis said, it's well-balanced, it's spacious, it's comfortable, safe and it is dynamically capable. And unlike you, many people actually find the design attractive, like me. I find the styling so pretty I've actually ordered a new E350 and will be picking it up in Germany in two weeks (European Delivery Program).

Wow, the GLs are doing great. Just picked up a 2010 GL350. Must be a more popular SUV now that there are three variants.
