BMW Struggles For A Grip As Sales Dip 3.9% In May: Mini Sales Drop 8.2%
BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported May sales of 22,092 vehicles delivering the best result this year in spite of volume being down 3.9 percent compared to May 2009. Year-to-date, the BMW Group also reported a total sales volume of 98,254 vehicles, up five percent from the same period last year.

"We continued to successfully manage through a difficult transition period prior to the launch of key, new high volume vehicles," said Jim O'Donnell, President of BMW of North America, LLC. "The good news is we're now in that launch window with the first of these products - the all-new 5 Series - entering the market this month."

The new BMW 5 Series kicks-off a model offensive that will replace about 60 percent of BMW's current model line-up with all-new products over the next 30 months. On the MINI side, starting in 2011, MINI's product range will double from three to six creating additional growth perspectives for the premium small car brand.

BMW Brand Sales

Taking the limited availability of the 5 Series and X3 ahead of the new model launches into account, the BMW brand managed to hold its own in May selling 17,859 vehicles, a slight decrease of 2.9 percent versus last May. Year-to-date, sales increased by six percent to 81,450 units.

After the first five months of the year, BMW held onto its leading position in the important premium midsize "3 Series" segment with sales up 15.9 percent to 40,019 units accounting for almost 50 percent of BMW's overall sales volume in the U.S. BMW also kept its lead in the large luxury vehicle segment with sales of the 7 Series up 114.2 percent to 5,119 units. The BMW X5 xDrive35d continued to lead the premium diesel segment in the U.S. with 3,256 vehicles delivered to customers, up 126 percent, during the first five months of the year selling more than twice as many vehicles than its closest competitor.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles

In May, sales of BMW's used vehicles (including certified pre-owned vehicles) sold through BMW's dealership network increased 4.1 percent to 14,958 vehicles. Year-to-date, used vehicle sales were up 5.6 percent to 70,278 vehicles.

MINI Brand Sales

Coming from a very strong performance in May 2009, MINI USA reported sales of 4,233 cars, a decrease of 8.2 percent. Year over year, MINI showed a stable performance with 16,804 units, up 0.1 percent and continued to increase its share in a market that is still lagging other segments.

You can call us badgewhores if it makes you feel better, I buy the 3-series simply because it's an awesome car. I don't seem to be alone here.

BMW sold more 3 series than Audi did of their whole range... how is this being demolished? Please explain...

Well, no one can expect positive gains EVERY month.

There's a new 1 coming, the 3 coupe has been freshened, the new 5 is hitting dealers, the new X3 and 6 will hit the road this year, and the 7 line-up is expanding; I'm thinking they'll be fine. As it stands, even with sales down due to low 5 inventories, they still have numbers audi and infiniti can only DREAM about...

the explanation is extremely simple: the second-best selling model (the 5-series) and the third-best selling model (the X5) are being replaced in june. april and may saw the closing out of the old models.

july sales will read: BMW sees massive sales increase.

enthusiastx11: I hope you are right. However I think that 7 is not helping...it is just average...and Audi A8...or even the old S class is doing a better job if you remember that it is an old model against the new.

Excuses like "the new 5 is just now here" or "the new X3 is coming" are lame. Why?

Because EVERY car company has a new model in some stages coming out and yet they all posted gains. Even embattled Toyota. No, this is bad for Munich and the new Fbland, oooops- I mean F10- will not be enough.

It's interesting that for all of the noise BMW makes, Subaru sold more cars last month them BMW+Mini.

The real problem we had was inventories. The 2011 just started hitting the dealers in Late May. The 2010's were widdled down to nothing. We had no 3-series in stock, virtually only a few 5-series left.

June and July will be big months for BMW.

I think it has more to do with people who are walking into a BMW dealer today and doing so many spins trying to look at all the different models and version of them that they get dizzy and stupified and run out screaming. Their exlclusive dealerships don't have the capacity for all these brands. Hence you order your car and wait 6 months.

Interesting tidbit on the flagship segment. The 7 isn't doing as well as the S-class as many people had originally thought and this is especially surprising given the newness of the 7 vs the age of the S. Will be interesting to see how the new 5 does against the 1 yr old E.
