Hyundai Stays On the Offensive By Leaping Forward 23% In May Sales
Hyundai Motor America today announced sales of 49,045 vehicles in May, a 33 percent increase versus May 2009 and an all-time May sales record for Hyundai. The all-new Sonata and Tucson saw sales soar 92 percent and 227 percent, respectively, over last May. This marks the seventeenth consecutive month of year-over-year retail market share gains for Hyundai and the best share month this year. Year to date, Hyundai sales are up 23 percent compared with 2009.

"As we continue to refresh and expand our model line-up, we are clearly appealing to customers who have placed Hyundai on their shopping list for the very first time," said Dave Zuchowski, Hyundai Motor America's vice present of national sales. "This considerable broadening of our customer base comes at a time when we are continuing to reduce our fleet mix, thus improving the overall quality of our market share.

"For the third straight month, our all-new Sonata is the third-best selling mid-size car in the country in retail sales, well ahead of strong rivals such as Nissan Altima, Chevy Malibu and Ford Fusion," Zuchowski added. "Sonata is the number one researched car at Edmunds.com for the eleventh straight week and consumers love Sonata's breakthrough design, 35 mile-per-gallon fuel economy, and lower depreciation than Honda Accord."

On a year-over-year basis, Elantra, Sonata and Tucson sales increased 30, 47 and 153 percent, respectively. Genesis achieved an all-time monthly sales record, with sales up 27 percent, marking the 11th consecutive month of year-over-year sales gain.

I agree. Hyundai apparently had its numbers wrong, or they somehow got sales figures excluding the Altima coupe.

LOL, that is hilarious, no one believes that except you. You like Hyundai, we get it, but you can't make real car people like them, so get over it.

I'll tell ya what, this looks like Sonata is definitely building momentum. Hard to ignore. Their continued sales gains are ahead of the release of both their turbo and hybrid models which are in the 2nd half of this year.

Nissan's Altima better watch out now, because it looks like Sonata is gunning for the 3rd pole slot just behind the two best selling import brands.

I expect Sonata sales to continue their vertical climb.
