Next-generation Nissan 370Z to use Mercedes-Benz engines
Nissan has plans to drastically shake up the design of its next-generation Z-car. There’s mention of diesel engines and a four-cylinder hybrid powertrain, which is sourced as part of its recent tie-up with Daimler.

As part of their deal, Renault-Nissan will supply three and four-cylinder petrol engines and electric technology to Daimler. In exchange, Renault-Nissan will receive four, six and eight-cylinder powerplants. Reports say that CEO Carlos Ghosn wants to install some of those units in the next Zed to make sure that the car meets the stricter emission standards

That doesn't make any since! I would rather have the Nissan VQ series engine than a Merc engine, as the VQ are bullet proof.

The VQ is showing its age in terms of refinement. Many reviews have commented on the lack of refinement and smoothness at higher RPM's. Even the current 268-hp V6 from Mercedes' is more refined at higher RPM's (I have this engine in my wife's '09 C350 and soon will enjoy this same engine in my upcoming E350).

I have a feeling the new Mercedes V6 might find its way into the future Z, perhaps with turbocharging, as this new V6 from Mercedes' was designed to be used as either naturally aspirated or turbocharged.

Think twice. There's only one engine that can rev to 8-9000 rpm like nothing - Rotary. Even the I6 in E46 M3 come noisy in upped end, so why criticize a high-rev V6? If you want a smooth quality RWD, get a Lexus. A smooth Z will lose its character.

Ja ja lol...I hope they buid good chasis, if not the torque of those engines will twist the cars, unless they use small MB engines.

I think speed123 was referring to the modability of the VQ series. These cars can take a ton of boost on the stock block and still put well over 100K on the odometer, a large percentage of Z buyers will do engine mods to their cars. I would hate to see that go even though I don't mod anymore.

I still have fond memories of my supercharged 98 Maxima SE, over 300 FWHP with more than 100 1/4 mile passes and the stock block lasted over 270K miles. Maybe Merc will throw one of those big V8s into the Z & G....

So what will they call it?

The AMG 370Z.......? Complete with little "kompressor" badges on the front fenders.

"Having more environmentally friendly versions would also entice buyers in Japan’s domestic sports car market."

Yes, because sports car enthusiasts all over the world always want to buy cars based around being environmentally friendly vs being the fastest toy on the road.

Let me call two japanese friends of mine (one in Tokyo and one in Nagoya) and ask them when they bought their NSX and Silvia respectivly...was it the gas milage they were looking at when they made their purchases?

Oh wait...I don't have to call them, I just remembered where I put my common sense. Its right here in my back pocket, right next to (will you look at that!) Carlos Goshens common sense.

Geez...I'd better give his back. It looks like he is going to need it.

Im certainly no benz fan, but, maybe they can teach nissan how to make a SMOOTH V6, and one that doesnt sound like it's falling apart the higher it revs.

sports cars are not suppose to have the smoothest ride.
