RUMOR: BMW's 500cc Three Cylinder Plan, Does This Seem Realistic?
BMWBlog reports:

The BMW rumormill continues to churn and today, we have something new around a future BMW engine. Same BMW insider, Scott27, brings upfront some exciting news around a 500cc three-cylinder engine that will help BMW achieve their CO2 level goals.

“It is no secret that in terms of downsizing its CO 2 levels, BMW are moving to replace its current range of engines with new three, four, six and eight-cylinders.

The new three-cylinder will be part of a range of engines utilizing a new common 500cc per cylinder base design which also uses Direct-Injection and Turbo charging. This engine will be featured in many BMW models, but will not be perceived as a base engine or entry model...

Am I missing something here or is the wrong part emphasized. Isn't a 3.0L 6-cylinder, 500cc per cylinder? Or is it the fact they are considering 1.5L engines?

You're not missing anything, though you seem to have forgotten that Outta-Spice writes (and approves of) headlines that hint of controversy, even if none lies within the article.

^ exactly. BMW has already been using 500cc per cylinder engines for many many years. They currently have 2.0L 4-cylinders, 3.0L 6-cylinders, 4.0L 8-cylinders, 5.0L 10-cylinders, and 6.0L 12-cylinders. Obviously the technology isn't all the same but the only new thing in terms of engine size is the 1.5L 3-cylinder.
