PHOTO GALLERY: Is Porsche's Boxster Spyder The PUREST Porsche?
Sure, it is a Boxster. Sure, it wears a funny hat and it is impractical. Sure, it has a mid-engine setup.
So, it must be a proper Porsche.
Probably the biggest misconception about any of the Boxster's variants is that it is not a
real
Porsche but I am willing to wager that the new Boxster Spyder is going to change all of that. And, here's why:
It is more than 175 pounds lighter, was lowered 20mm, has added 10 more horsepower and can achieve up to 29 MPG in a highway environment. Uh, what is there
not
to like?
001 has been lucky enough to get behind the wheel at a recent drive in Santa Monica and take it for a spin around the town. Looks like a tough job, right?
Make sure to explore 001's photo gallery of the hardcore Spyder below...

There goes "ooR" again, with anything to bait flamers and stir up the controversy.
This reminds me of the bickering that goes on in BMW motorcycle forums as to the "right type" of BMW (air-cooled boxer heritage, oil-cooled boxer, or inline innovation). What's next after "car purity"? Posts about the "racial purity" of the drivers?

Think "GT3 convertible, on a budget."

I liked what Peter Egan of Road and Track said about the car...basically that this would pull people into the dealers where they would test drive the Spyder...but leave in a regular Boxster with the normal goodies.

If I had the cash this would be my Porsche. I would just add in A/C and a stereo. If it's actually 61 grand as equipped I figure you'd be out the door for 65 grand with the options I just mentioned and a 6 speed manual. Thats all I would need for me.
