USED Car Showdown: 2008 VW Passat CC Vs. 2004 Mercedes-Benz CLS

USED Car Showdown: 2008 VW Passat CC Vs. 2004 Mercedes-Benz CLS
Although the Passat CC is a great car, when you compare it to the real deal Mercedes-Benz CLS it is kind of like a Chinatown fake Cartier or Rolex. It is nice and will keep time just as well but at the end of the day it is just not the same.

But when you take into account a few more years a bunch more miles, are you still as willing to take it home over a much newer VW?

What say you, Spies?

Autocar reports:

You'll notice the similarities between the Mercedes CLS and VW Passat CC, but which is the better used car buy?

The Passat CC looks suspiciously like a 2008 tribute act, covering Merc’s 2004 smash hit. Back then, the CLS quickly gained status as something of a style icon. It may be a simplistic guess, but surely Volkswagen’s marketeers must have noticed the similarity.

If we had £25k to satisfy the need for a swift, refined and well engineered four-door coupe, the CC would be top of the pops – not least because the chart’s a bit empty of four door coupes...

well, if I were to decide today which one to purchase, it would probably be the benz. the body styling is still the same as the ones on the road now (even though the new one should be out by the end of the year).

As a pure status symbol, its the benz. However, Im sure the CC has more gadgets if it is loaded up correctly.

Nice comparison. It all boils down to budget. The CLS is a much better performer but arguably at a much higher maintenance cost.

Either way for what it is the CC is very expensive to maintain and really not that far off what the CLS is. Given the Passat's reliability unless you just want the new cheaper car from an ownership experience the Mercedes would probably be the better choice
