CONFIRMED: BMW's Next-Gen M5 Gets TT'd
When BMW introduced the X5/6M, which was the first M car to feature turbocharging, enthusiasts balked and scoffed.

I did too.

But then I drove it, and my God, you quickly realize what a phenomenal vehicle it really is. The motor is so lively and the transmission is razor sharp -- EVEN for an auto with a converter it shifts just as fast as a dual-clutch box. It is off the charts.

Now that BMW's M boss has confirmed that the next-generation M5 will feature the same powerplant, all BMW diehards should rejoice and be very excited for what is set to come from the M division.

BMWBlog reports:

What started as a rumor last year, it has finally received some official BMW backup. The next generation 2012 BMW M5 will be indeed powered by a V8 turbocharged engine. The information comes from BMW’s M boss, Dr. Kay Segler, in a recent interview for Auto Bild.

The powerplant in the F10 M5 is based on the same unit found in the BMW X5 M and X6M, the twin scroll twin turbo version of the N63, known as the S63, with Cylinder-bank Comprehensive Manifold (CCM).

While Dr. Segler has not confirmed the power output, everyone’s expectations lie within the 585-600 horsepower range. As the M boss pointed out, the new M5 will offer the best of two worlds: for normal everyday driving and for use as a race car , triggered by a push of a button. “The philosophy of “Two Cars in One”, which we have once established, you will find it explicitly in this vehicle.”, said Dr. Segler...

I drove the X5 M and its insane. The burble and pops that come from the exhaust upon upshifts is beautiful. As stated the shifts are quick as hell. No turbo lag experienced.Everything is right on.

Nice, but expect 110k w/options for it.

For that coin I'd rather pick a preowned Panamera or Quattroporte. Or- if it's anything like the E60 M5 it will depreciate heavily and make a great pre-owned car itself after a year and a half.......

I don't think it will be quite 110k, maybe the M6, but not the M5... It will probably be barely six figs fully teched out.

My BMW was the biggest heartbreak of my life and I won't let any more negativity in my life so I won't buy another BMW. What put the nail in the coffin was when the B fell of the logo and I freakin MW instead of a BMW and the next week the kidney grill popped out as the chintzy plastic bracket went KAput! The 2001 330Ci convertible was a 50 grand LEMON!

How can the "B" fall off. the roundel is a painted and engraved one piece design. the letter couldn't possible fall off. That would be like saying the letter "C" fell off of my Caps lock button on my keyboard. Where exactly did the letter fall off of?

pennfootball: I do understand you and I am not going to say that you are lying..but it is realy hard to believe it....It sounds to me as a big lemon. May be you got the worst car in the whole production.

I admit, I had a rough ride with a 2002 M3 that began to rattle and squeak. I also had a 2002 745Li that didn't have any of those problems. So maybe it was an E46 issue.

But I have never heard a complaint on the craftsmanship of an M5 or M6. Electronics issues maybe. So I wouldn't allow an issue with an E46 to stop me from getting into an M5/M6...

And for BondMI6, go price out a Panamera Turbo which would be the only Panamera comparable to the new M5 then depreciate it for three years. Maybe you'll be at the price of a new M5...A reasonably loaded Panamera Turbo will run you $180k and the Quattroporte is not in the same class as either from a performance standpoint.

vman1013: Your comments are very clever however you miss one point, He is talking about PREOWNED cars and thats a big diference....In the other hand the reliability of of Porsche in the last 10 years make me think that the Porsche will last in good condition far beyond 5 years.

Why is this news? Everyone knew this was coming because Bimmer heads have been talking about the new M5 for almost a year now.
