2011 Volkswagen Phaeton Official Details

2011 Volkswagen Phaeton Official Details
Volkswagen released the official detail for 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton.

Volkswagen produces one of the world’s highest quality and most exclusive automobiles at the German Transparent Factory (Dresden): the Phaeton. The quality, style and travelling comfort of this saloon (standard all-wheel drive, air suspension and 4-zone automatic climate control) set their own standards. The Phaeton is offered with two wheelbases as well as two rear seating versions (three seat bench or two individual seats). Now Volkswagen has further perfected the brand’s flagship.

The entire front end was redesigned, including the standard bi-xenon headlights with LED cornering lights. Also tuned to match this look are the new LED rear lights. In parallel, an abundance of new technical features are making their way into the vehicle. They include a new brake system, the Dynamic Light Assist (camera-based, dynamic main beam control) system being introduced in a saloon for the first time, and a navigation system, which can integrate online data in the map display upon request. Moreover, thanks to an optional front camera the 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton “sees” traffic signs; speed limit signs are visualized in the instrument cluster (multifunction display) and the central touchscreen of the centre console. The system will be the first in the world to recognize and display no-passing zone markings. The latest generation of the Phaeton will launch on the market in just a few weeks (Europe in June; China in August).

V6, V8 and W12 engines: On the drive side, four engines are available (one turbodiesel, three petrol). The six, eight and twelve cylinder engines cover a power range extending from 176 kW / 240 PS to 331 kW / 450 PS. The six-cylinder petrol engine in the Phaeton is a V6 direct-injection engine (FSI with 206 kW / 280 PS). At the power levels above the V6 FSI, a V8 and a W12 petrol engine are available (246 kW / 335 PS and 331 kW / 450 PS). In the diesel area, Volkswagen offers an extremely fuel efficient and refined V6 TDI (174 kW / 240 PS) whose combined fuel consumption has been reduced from 9.0 to 8.5 l/100 km (equivalent to 224 g/km CO2).

Design avant-garde: The Volkswagen Design-DNA developed by the Head of Design for the Group, Walter de Silva, defines the car’s lines. In the area of the new front end, in particular, the design team added a measure of precision to the original, stylish and superlative image of this model. This gave the timelessly elegant Phaeton a broader and more powerful appearance: In keeping with the current Volkswagen Design-DNA, horizontal lines dominate the geometry. Different than on any other Volkswagen based on this new DNA so far, in the 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton the radiator grille is not styled in glossy black; rather a completely new chrome element is used. This radiator trim has a decisive impact on the styling of the 2011 Volkswagen Phaeton.

Joining the left and right sides of the grille are the newly developed bi-xenon headlights with integrated LED indicator lights and LED cornering lights. The new bumper design complements the radiator grille and headlight styling. Here too, horizontal lines are the virtual common thread linking their design. Even the front fog lights now shine in LED technology. The rear section of the car was also modified. In this area, the design team chose not to change the classic, clear and powerful basic styling of the Phaeton; instead it developed new smoked LED rear lights. Similar to the front end, the rear bumper was also modified. In its side profile, the car’s new side trim strips and narrow-styled LED indicator lights in the outside mirrors stand out.

I don't know why but i really don't like this car at all.

I know why, it looks dated!

I like it. Its actually very clean looking. The only thing that makes it look "dated" is the front overhang and the side profile.

I think we shouldn't hide behind the real reason. It's badged a VW. But I actually like this car. I respect anyone who owns one. It's built very well and as a luxury car it's worth the price but for the name plate that's purely subjective.

UberPassat II.

The Phaeton performs and has the fit and finish of a genuine luxury car. Inside, it looks the part, save the VW logo. Externally, it looks like an upscale, and scaled-up Passat, including the VW logo.

VW already owns Audi, their luxury division. Trying to sell the Phaeton under the VW brand is like trying to make a $90,000 luxury Honda. Few buyers will entertain the prospect. My opinion has been supported by the dismal sales.

If VW is listening: Leave the VW brand for sensible, economical transportation. You may choose to pump up the Audi brand by bettering the already great A8, or creating an even higher-end Audi. Alternatively, consider creating a new brand that has only super-luxury cars. Like MB's Maybach. Okay, maybe not :-) But you get the idea.

VW? High-end Luxury? Even Toyota was smart enough to not use the Toyota name when they decided to go upscale. But the Lexus’s are still just Toyotas… I take that back. Kudos to VW for not trying to wash one over on us by using a different name, like Lexus.

But this Phaeton has "FAIL" written all over it.

What? Please show me that thread where I defended infiniti? Ignorance? I guess my Toyota comment must have hit a soft spot. LOL!!!

Here's what you call defending infiniti.

Someone said; "Your G35 is an Altima with leather".

I said; "Altimas are not RWD Like the G35/G37, the Altima is FWD. Completely different platform."

All I did was state facts. Lexus could share zero parts with Toyota. That doesn't mean that the Lexus isn't still a Toyota Product. Or are you arguing against that fact?

"Just look abobe you fool. You imply that Lexus is simply a Toyota and has the public fooled, yet they share little if any in the way of platforms, parts or drivetrain."

- Seems like they have you fooled. Lol!! They don’t have to share parts to be a part of the same company. Lexus is a division of Toyota Motors. Sorry if that FACT rubs you the wrong way. You ever look at the Lexus IS-250/350 power-windows switches and the radio? Those parts are straight from the Toyota parts bin. LOL!!

"Are we gonna go post by post to prove how you consistently imply that Lexus is just a Toyota, like you just said the LF-A was in your other post?"

- So Lexus isn't Toyota, wasn’t formed by Toyota, and isn't a subsidiary of Toyota? What planet are you living on? Obviously not Planet Earth. Maybe LexusLand? LOL!!

branding and marketing have completely taught consumers that if it doesn't have the brand it isn't worthy. Why are the merits of a vehicle so greatly diminish when it's worth, build quality and value proposition are excellent?

yes, from a marketing standpoint, the resources dropped on the Phaeton are wasted and could be better served pumping up Audi in the N.A. market. But the factory that VW build in the end is used by Bentley to pump out the Continental which is built on the same chassis....and similar shared technologies...

the four door Bentley sold better in the US than the Phaeton...now who is the smarter consumer?

Thank You.

Like i have said many times.

Anybody who tries to use Prestige as a reason for choosing an S-Class or 7-Series over the Phaeton is a Total Moron and definitely has no Class, hence why they stick so stupidly to the perceived Prestige of the 2 German Marques.

Others who automatically think VW does not know how to manufacture a Top End Luxury Vehicle are also Morons as VW has through Bently and Bugatti proved them 100% Wrong.

While honda and toyota may be more reliable than VW , VW's have a much nicer interior. Not quite luxury like Lexus/BMW/etc, but a slight cut above honda and toyota. Compare the passat to the camry. The base engine in the passat blows the doors off of the base engines in any honda/toyota or any other car in its class, and nearly matches their v6's. plus the VW handles way better and is a blast to drive compared to the others and still can achieve 30mpg. Not to mention the interior is nicer in my opinion, especially the quality of the leather. I'm no VW fan boy but If I had to buy a sensible family sedanthe VW would be at the top of my list. It's more fun to drive than any other family sedan. Malibu/Accord/Camry/Altima/Sonata/fusion are nowhere close, especially when comparing base engines.

I'm not sure I understand the marketing strategy, especially when this affects a sister company. Audi and VW can't be competitors but yet, this car does seem to encroach on Audi's high end market share. Is it VW's secret intention to be the next Audi?...this car doesn't make sense at least from a US market perspective.

In the beginning there was no marketing strategy, the head of engineering at VW group just wanted to show how overengineered of a luxury sedan they could produce. Out came the Phaeton, VW keeps trying to sell the Phaeton to cover the initial engineering cost for the car, which by the way, if it had the turbocharged W12 would be a better car than the Continental Flying Spur from a longevity standpoint.
