Should States Be Allowed To Flag Car Of An Underage Driver?

A New Jersey law--the first of its kind in the country--requiring drivers younger than 21 to put a small red decal on their license plates has both teens and adults upset, according to a story on the Wall Street Journal Web site.

When one mother took her 16-year-old to the Motor Vehicle Commission for a learner's permit, the clerk told her she needed to buy red decals for her daughter. "When hell freezes over, I'll buy those stickers," she told the Journal.

About 250,000 drivers are subject to the law, and the motor-vehicle department has sold 105,000 stickers. Teens caught without the decals face a $100 fine.

Absolutely not!

Flag the plate in the system so it can be looked up by the authorities. Don't tell a perv that there is potential victim driving ahead of them.

I predict this will *NOT* be an effective method to increase safety on our roads. Maybe I'm just too pessimistic or something.

Uhh we motorcyclists have to have an under 21 licence on our motorcycles in all 50 states as far as I know. We are not butt hurt from it.

Never seen an underage plate in Texas of any sort. But I could be wrong.

this would be more effective with DUI's (or whatever acronym your state prefers). And i love how we always concentrate on how bad our 16yo are at driving, when we should probably be looking at the drives Ed class itself.

We are a republic, states should be able to do what they want as long as is does not voliate the U.S. constitution.

I agree, but it is still an idiotic idea.

I can see no positives, only potential negatives.

As one poster said, note this information on the computer file so the police can see it if need be.

If we can start profiling this way, lets start flagging sex offenders cars, convicted fellons, minorities, welfare recipients, old people, and dead beat dads.

Dont like it. Can you tell?
