Luxury SUV Shoot Out! 2010 Land Rover LR4 vs 2010 Lexus GX 460 vs 2010 Mercedes-Benz GL450
Please answer the following question as honestly as possible. I require a sport/utility vehicle because:

(A) I chase gazelle across the Gobi Desert (well, I do some camping in locales without electrical outlets).
(B) A huge and rugged vehicle is essential for visiting the farmer's market, picking up fresh organic greens, and chauffeuring Dacoda to her pottery class.

If you answered "B," then close your browser immediately, and buy a Honda Civic. If you answered "A," however, read on. Gathered here are three industrial-grade sport/utes. And, yea, we're going stalk through the valley of death.

Interesting to note what MT says about the reported GX460 handling issues:

In the days before traction- and stability-control systems, most motorists understood that, if you drive like a raging idiot, you'll get into trouble whatever the make or model of vehicle. Today, you're apparently supposed to be able to take an SUV -- a machine with an inherently high center of gravity -- hurl it into a turn way too fast, jump off the gas, and have the vehicle's miracle systems save you and your careless self from the resulting spin.

we were driving way, way harder than any SUV pilot would ever attempt.

Even so, never did the GX feel scary or unsafe. To paraphrase the familiar refrain: Your stupidity may vary.

I honestly don't understand how people forget that the person driving is the ultimate stability control system, this isn't a sports car, it's a large heavy utility vehicle and should be driven as such.

Does this mean that consumer reports should be reprimanded? While they were driving the GX, they thought they were testing a Porsche 911.

uhm no... if I were driving a vehicle with such a high cog I'd like to know that I have a working stability control system so I don't end up sideways at highway speed... which would happen if I try to avoid someone jumping out at me or if I hit a patch of ice and started spinning...

Agree Agent009 and look at that big jump by GX460. Seems like they were really pushing it to it's limits. Nice luxurious and capable SUV. I only wish the front end styling was a bit better rest is very good.

Why do I have a feeling this thread was created to start a flame war...

Well I will take the GL but I have to be honest. Those numbers are wrong: No way to put a SUV so heavy from 0 t 60 in 6.5 seconds, GL550 with bigger engine will, but not GL450 with just 335HP.

If it is the Diesel 450 Engine then yes it can.

The Old Audi Q7 4.2 TDI pushed that Behemoth to 62mph in 6.4 secs
The New 4.2 TDI in the Q7 can do the same job in 5.8 secs

I really hope this doesn't turn in to a flame war but I really like this new Lexus GX. Personally I've never driven the Land Rover so I won't comment on it. But the new GX seems really fine tuned with a great interior. The darker interior (I think they call it sepia) is a really nice look.

Also you can get all Off Road capability of the other two (LEX & ROV), but sadly that is optional so that means more money in a Suv that is already very expensive, so I thing the best option is the Lex.

I like the land rover personally. I actually take mine of road so I would welcome the off road ability even if it meant sacrificing the ultra smooth and quietness of the Lexus. I actually might end up with a GL though because I can't think of a better family vehicle that I like as much.

I'd choose the GL only because it's the only near-full size SUV with a diesel engine available. I need to seat 7 comfortably, and since there is no Suburban/Expedition diesel available, my only choice in this category is the GL.

I wish Ford would move its awesome new Powerstroke diesel engine to the Expedition in a 5.8L form.

I think the GL is pretty full size. I guess you haven't seen one in person before.

The GX is wearing a Lexus suit. It's based off the Toyota Prado (FACT).
